Do my kids have to take their shoes off?

We are leaving one week from today.I have a daughter that gets particular about things and may not be too happy about walking on a dirty floor without shoes. I thought I read somewhere that children no longer have to take their shoes off during airport screenings. We haven't flown for a couple of years and I'm wondering if it's true.

Are there any other airport with kids tips anyone has?

Thanks!

The rules don't require children under 12 to take them off, but they should be prepared to do so at the whim of the TSA agent on duty. We flew 2 weeks ago from NY to Las Vegas and back with our 14 yo DS and 11 yo DD, and both were asked to remove their shoes. I wasn't going to quibble.
