Do my kids have to take their shoes off?

We are leaving one week from today.I have a daughter that gets particular about things and may not be too happy about walking on a dirty floor without shoes. I thought I read somewhere that children no longer have to take their shoes off during airport screenings. We haven't flown for a couple of years and I'm wondering if it's true.

Are there any other airport with kids tips anyone has?

Thanks!

Im not sure if children have to wear shoes through security or not. But, I'd incourage your daughter to wear socks in her shoes. Security allow you to be screened with socks on. So there will never be a time where she has to go barefoot in the airport.

We just got back from California and kids under the age of 12 do not need to take their shoes off. If she is 12 or older she will go through the same process as an adult. Hope this helps!

No, kids stopped having to remove shoes many months ago. The rumor is that one day adults may not have to either. Have your kids be prepared to answer what their name is - many TSA agents ask them to match the child with the boarding pass since kids don't carry IDs.

Lately I have been wearing moccasin type slippers when I fly. Sounds funny but the are easy to get on and off, they are comfortable on the plane and yet I can walk in them no problem and they don't look too strange.

As others above have posted, it seems as if they have not been asking young children to take off their shoes. When we flew to CA this summer, they did not have DD9 take off her shoes. My thought is while they don't usually ask children to remove their shoes, it doesn't mean they won't. We always have her in slip-on shoes with socks just in case!

For me I do not mind the screenings and wish they did not get lax in times when there have not been attacks. People are free to drive or take a train or a boat if they feel strongly enough against the screenings.

The last year or so they changed it so children 12 and under do not have to take their shoes off. My kids left their shoes on the last 3 trips.

"Kids under 12 no longer need to remove their shoes" is the official TSA stance. http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/traveling-children We told our kids when we flew a few months ago that they'd see the adults taking off their footwear and that they MIGHT get asked to do it, too, so they wouldn't be surprised, and we made sure everyone was wearing socks. Neither they nor any other child we saw were asked to remove their shoes at either airport.

I'm with DreamFinder: be prepared for anything. What the regulations say and what will actually happen at the checkpoint are not always the same thing. The TSA has VERY broad authority, can be extremely inconsistent, and they can really mess up your trip if a conflict arises. Your best bet is to be prepared with socks and do rehearsals with your child if you think she might need extra prep. Same goes for toiletries and other sundries - some things are fine in one airport or with one agent but then turn out to be a problem at a different time or place. Probably your child will walk through without difficulties, but there's no way to be sure of it.

When we went last summer Manchester NH did make kids take shoes off, but in Orlando we were told by TSA when we got into line that kids could leave shoes on
