DLR Restaurant / Food Thread

We actually went to Blue Bayou in April 2021 and besides lack of bread, it was great and they did have the Surf and Turf.

Worse about the new "Filet Mignon" from reviews I've read is it's still the same petite Filet Mignon but without the Lobster tail.

Based on the raw chicken picture someone posted who knows if they can even cook a steak still anyways.

Has anyone been to Carthay Circle in recent months? Curious if they also declined.
I was very satisfied with Blue Bayou in July, with the extreme caveat that I had never been before.

Carthay I had low expectations for based on past experiences, but we had a very nice time with good service and better-than-expected food.

Napa Rose was flawless.

That said, the lack of bread at places like BB, Carthay, and even Napa Rose is absurd and indefensible unless you're a Disney accountant.
I have to try the Knotts chicken one of these days. Well, I guess I should go to Knotts first. It’s been 18 years.
Here's the thing (and my hot take that many have disagreed with me on): it's less about the actual fried chicken (which I think is awful and pales in comparison to Plaza's for me personally) and more about the experience of eating in the restaurant.

People go for the fried chicken because they're primed for it, or maybe some assume that you only get the full experience if you order specifically that, but there are around 6 different options (others I remember off the top of my head: chicken dumplings, chicken tenders) you can choose from and still get the full dinner treatment. The dinner comes with a roll, salad, soup, your entree, and boysenberry pie (if a la mode isn't included, pay the extra $2 or whatever to add it).

I personally have found that the chicken tenders work as a better way to get the dinner experience than the fried chicken, which isn't to my taste. That might just be me, but when I took a friend, he ordered the standard fried chicken and also preferred the tenders, so there's at least one other person in this world that feels the same way as me. So go with whatever sounds best and don't feel obligated to order the fried if you're not feeling it or something else might fit your tastes better.

It's also a decent deal for what you get. Although I did not feel like Plaza skimped on me in July, value for your money is decidedly better at Knott's when it comes to fried chicken dinners.

Also, Ghostrider is good now (though I personally spring for a Fastlane every time I go to Knott's because I find the line for that and the flume to be long, slow, and generally insufferable). You've got to go back for that too!

Awful. They took off all the most popular menu items. They now have literally four entrees (only three when I was there as they were out of the fish) and one side dish (not including bread that used to be free). I asked for any kind of vegetable instead of the mashed potatoes and the guy was like "maybe we could find some green beans from the kids menu?" Like for real?

Where are the duck wings? Where are the biscuits everyone came there for?

It IS worth noting that basically* all of the parks I'm used to going to that had ANY reputation for good food offerings have more-or-less brought their pre-pandemic menus back in full EXCEPT DLR

So yes, staffing is difficult, but if virtually everyone else is closer to normal than you are, then it's reasonable to assume that you just might be part of the problem.

Even WDW, a few shuttered restaurants aside, seems to be closer to normal restaurant operations and offerings. Or maybe it's just less obvious because their counter service options were already pretty bad pre-pandemic and there's a surplus of excellent table service restaurants to choose from.

With DLR, there are a lot of things I would like them to restore, but above all else I just want them to bring back the poutine flatbread and stop the forced dependence on the app for mobile order. That shouldn't be so much of an ask.

*The notable exception to this are the SeaWorld parks of Florida, which are actually much WORSE off than DLR is right now. They had reasonably good and interesting options in 2019 and they're almost all gone now. Not to mention the 5% surcharge that they add to all orders now just because and only make you aware of in microscopic, hard-to-read font.

Whoah! No way! The deep fried biscuits and the duck wings are what we went there for. They got rid of those?

Those were a special recipe from the Korean executive chef from that restaurant, I wonder if she parted ways with them. That's so awful. Based on those two being gone I have no reason to go back.

Edit:

Apparently she started at Napa Rose, oversaw Carthay Circle, moved back to Napa Rose, and just this year is in charge of Club 33. Good for her! But who is the person in charge of Carthay now? The biscuit and wings should have stayed even with a new chef.

Right? I just can't imagine a top tier restaurant with only 3-4 entree options and plain mashed potatoes as the only side option? Bizarre.

What’s wrong with KFC? KFC is like McDonalds. I don’t go to KFC because I’m craving good fried chicken. I go to KFC because I’m craving KFC…original recipe. Or because it’s convenient.

KFC has slowly nickeled and dimed its product into something that's a shell of its former self. I like the original recipe but it's not the same as it used to be.

Has anyone been to Wine Country Trattoria? I grabbed a lunch rez there a couple weeks from now (mainly because it was available). The menu looks OK, but you never know.

We're also doing brunch at Lamplight, which I've enjoyed before, and dinner at Napa. My two previous times there were very good; hopefully it still is.

Wine Country Trattoria should be good but is slightly below mediocre. It's a shame because it is a nice location for a restaurant, the food and service just isnt very good. I last went 5 years ago so it may be different now.

Lamplight Lounge and Napa are great choices, hope you enjoy!

I ate there as part of the WOC dining package. It was alright as far as I can remember.

Dined at Naples a couple months ago. IMO, best restaurant on property and was extremely dissapointed to find the pasta (in my case, the spaghetti & meatballs) had gone down drastically in quality. Sauce wasn’t nearly as flavorful as it used to be, meatballs were also much smaller than they used to be and lacking the flavor they once had. Very sad to say the least. Hoping their pizza is still great, as I have a lot of good memories dining there w friends & family through the years.

But yeah, dining for sure has lowered quality across the board. Last time I ate at Plaza Inn, the fried chicken was dry as opposed to juicy like it used to be. Corn dogs at the Red Wagon also tasted like they weren’t fresh/left out to get burned. Seems all serving sizes have downsized aswell. Again, just a crying shame. The Chapek effect is certainly noticeable to those that have gone a lot in the past and it’s been enough to not renew my pass after it expired this year. Not worth it anymore. Knott’s food is above & beyond when it comes to quality, quantity, & flavor these days.

I think to me whats the worst thing about the food cutbacks is you can't get the experience. At least genie lets you pay for a fastpass. When the fine dining declines it's just off the table permanently (pun intended).

Somehow they made Blue Bayou even worse. The Surf and Turf that was just Turf since August 2022 is now completely removed. Also no more Monte Cristo at the location that was known for Monte Cristos.

No more Creme Brule.

You can only get Chicken, Fish, or Prime Rib

Figured based on recent discussions I've seen about food quality changes it would be good to have a general thread on Restaraunts and food in the park.

In addition to post pandemic changes there have been many changes made in Summer 2022.

I was at Disneyland last month and before going went on Yelp / Trip Advisor and sorted by recent reviews. I strongly advise anyone to do this even if you've been to the park in the past.

Some changes I've noticed in the few times I've been post pandemic as well as the recent reviews are:

Smaller Portions
Menu Changes
Lack of Bread at Table Service

Blue Bayou:
-Blue Bayou in particular seems to have taken a turn for the worse since it reopened after a refurbishment in August 2022. For example, the "Surf and Turf" is now just "Turf" with the lobster tail removed so is just a very small streak, instead of Mashed Potatoes there's only a vegetable side.
-Reports that they play pop music instead of jazz music
-Super bright in there now (used to always be dark to the point that menus had built in lights)
-The reviews are abysmal now ever since the reopening.
-A poster on here showed they were served raw chicken

Carnation Cafe:
-The Chicken Fried Chicken is now 1/3 the size it used to be. This is all over Yelp / TripAdvisor and isn't isolated cases.

Cafe Orleans:
-Pomme Frites are now Steak Fries instead of Shoe String Fries
-The Monte Cristo is half the size it used to be

Stage Door Cafe:
-Chicken Breast Nuggets now different and worse, most likely from a different supplier
I had the Monte Cristo at Blue Bayou once and I would say that halving the size would actually be an improvement... of course, I'm sure the price didn't go down by half.

Disappointing to hear about the Blue Bayou, I would like to eat there again when we visit in March.

They were massive until a year or so ago. Way too much for one person.

As of this month Blue Bayou has no more Monte Cristo from the new menu, but Cafe Orleans still should.

At Cafe Orleans they've combined the pomme frites and the monte cristo into one menu item, so it's cost savings if you would have ordered both anyway.

The pomme frites didn't taste quite the same to me, but the only thing different with the monte cristo was the number of sandwiches.
