DL Subs return!

For those that don't follow the latest Disneyland happenings-- there are strong indications that, after a 5-year closure) "Submarine Voyage" will re-open for DL's 50th anniversary. (Jay Rasulo reportedly demanded it in light of Space Mountain's 2-year rehab, and workers have been seen in and around the lagoon).

It's a shame WDW has sunk its old "20,000 Leagues" subs out at their cruise line private island. It appears the attraction CAN be salvaged... IF they want to.

I'm not sure I'd call it a shame... i mean, for anyone who dives think how cool it would be to explore a "wreck" of a 20k leagues sub! I know I'd like to check it out. I think it's a good way of recycling old ride vehicles... though I do think it would be weird to swim across a mark IV :-)

the 20k leagues ride at WDW was pretty cool back in the day, but it just doesn't provide the level of ooh and aah now as it did back then - and as such it probably wouldn't do well if it were in operation today. that being said - i hope they come up with something cool for that area at WDW - does anyone know if there are any plans for that spot?

Jay Rasulo seems to be pusing alot of things, in my book thats a good thing, hope he keeps it up. I don't know about bringing back an old attraction, but anything in a defunct area would be cool. he's really thinking about the parks and how to better an experience.

Actually only one is sunk off of Castaway Cay. The others are sitting in Pluto Park.

Does anyone have the old track layout and overhead pic of the 20K LUTS when it was in operation? I remember going on that when I was a kid but it was ages ago. I'm curious as to what actually happened when you were on the ride. All I remember was that there was a big octupus :)

Thanks for the update! Why did submarine voyage close?

I doubt that even if Jay Rasulo wanted 20,000 leagues to be re-opened, it wouldn't be possible though.

Actually this has been in talks since last fall...The concept we were told was that they wanted to bring in an attraction like the one in Tokyo, but the work on the lagoon couldnt begin until after the work on the Matterhorn was finished.
They are working on lots of project ideas for the 50th.
I could have sworn I said this before, but no one believed me...

I remember taking my daughter on it before it closed. The poor mermaids were disintigrating right in front of me. My daughter was kinda freaked. Somewhat like the mistreated toys from toy story. And I plan to be there for DL's 50th! Woohoo!

It is just sad that they have let the lagoons in both park sit empty for so long. There are all kinds of water based rides they could dream up to put in there.

In the 2000 leagues lagoon, or submarine voyage lagoon? I hope not. Atlantis wasn't totally that good and not popular enough.

It would! The movie wasn't great (better than a lot of the new Disney movies), but a ride might be cool. I don't really remember the original ride (I was too young), but I want it back! I just hope they don't turn it into just another promotional ride, or do a bad job on it... Disney World has been centering around the movies lately (like changing AI, newish rides like Pooh, Buzz Lightyear, and a lot more movie merchandising)...

I'm excited to see what they are going to do for the 50th! I mean I know they are doing refurbs and stuff but think about all the shows and parades they probably have in the works!

I highly doubt that WDW will open 20kleagues, there is an article on jim hill media about why it was closed in the first place (it was a real pain to maintain) and further the ride/show building has been basically left to crumble for the past 10 years meaning that an overhaul would be extremely expensive, also the chances of putting in another ride there are also low because (and this is according to 1) my keys to the kingdom tour and 2) the people on this board -- tha if the water from the lagoon is drained the walls will collapse into the utilidors because the water supports the walls. Sorry to be a party pooh-per but a WDW 20kluts is not probable

When the Submarine Lagoon reopens at Disneyland (which will occur within the next year), it will be very similar to the ride that closed in the mid 90s. WDW's version will likely never return, however.
