Disneyworld and claustrophobia

Anybody else have problems in some of the attractions due to claustrobia? For example when they squeeze everyone in the elevator with no doors at the haunted mansion or the library in the tower of terror? I love the rides themselves but I may not go on them because of this. Anyone else have this problem??

I'm very claustrophobic. In holding rooms like HM and ToT, I always position myself at the perimeter, and that works fine.

The only ride I've ever had an issue with is M:S, but the motion sickness was worse, so I don't ride it anyway.

I am too and I don't have a issue in those rides. Put me in a elevator jammed packed with people and I freak out.

As much as I dislike large crowds of people I still love going to WDW. Just a shade over 5 foot and my mom is under 5 feet, being stuck in a big crowd exiting the park is like a nightmare to us. We usually leave the parks before the big crush and try to arrive before them too.

Haunted Mansion annoys me when they are loading both rooms and they are let out too close together and there is a jam of people in the loading room. People have to go from 10 people across to single file line, so sometimes it gets a little crazy in there, but it loads pretty fast.

Mission Space is on my avoid list...your are packed in and then the shoulder harnesses are put down ...plus you know the spinning lol

I panic a little bit on Expedition Everest when we are going backwards and the light from the tunnel gets smaller and smaller, but I try to take a few deep breaths and remember it will be over in a few seconds.

Other than that just some of the smaller, enclosed places I just try to relax and remember it will be over shortly ;)

I'm not usually ever claustrophobic, but I was on M:S when someone had a panick attack and haven't gone back on it in years since then. That experience did feak me out a little and I was surprised that the person had to go through the whole ride like that.

I've never been on Mission Space due to my concerns about the space available and moving, but I've never seen others confirm this suspicion. Seeing these responses, I think I will definitely never ride it. It makes my heart beat faster just seeing people on it in planning videos and specials.

I'm not claustrophobic for small spaces, just specifically for being able to move. Since I've never done Mission Space, the only other ride I have some issue with is Stitch's Great Escape. What I do is sit up very tall when the restraint comes down and locks into place. That gives me some extra space to slouch so I don't feel trapped. I don't think any other ride in Disney parks has this type of restraint, everything else on coasters is over the lap or against your chest. May or may not help the OP specifically, but maybe someone else reading.

All of this. M:S is the only ride I simply cannot do without a panic attack.

This too. I'm 5 feet even, and the wall to wall crowds during closing (esp with small children) make me crazy. Arriving early is a good tip, take breaks mid-day, and at night you can leave early, but you can also wait out the crowd either by killing time in shops (which most people don't realize are still open) or by people watching (one of my favorite WDW pastimes ;))

Mission Space is very tight quarters. After you're seated the front of the compartment comes back towards you. If you think it looks tight before it's loaded, it's even more confined once the doors are closed. If you're the slightest bit claustrophobic, it is definitely one to miss.

The stretching room in HM and the library in ToT are both large enough rooms that you should get through those segment without much issue. Just keep to the sides near a door and remember that you are not trapped in the space.
You are not actually moving in the MK version of the stretching room, the ceiling is rising while the floor remains stationary.

The one ride I would think you should be concerned about is Mission Space. You are closed in a very small space for the entire ride. If you on the orange version trying to look out the sides is a bad idea also, since it can lead to motion sickness. I wouldn't even recommend the green side in your case however.

My mom is really claustrophobic and avoids any ride that has a harness that goes over her shoulders. Not sure if it's the same for you but she's much more relaxed if she isn't restrained that way. Are you going with a group? As kids, it was the family rules that in places like HM stretching room or ToT that we'd try to make a little room around my mom. She also asked CMs if she could wait to sit in certain spots (like on an end) and they were always very accommodating.

I'm mildly claustrophobic, and I don't bother with any version of M:S. I stopped riding ToT also, but that was more about not enjoying heights very much either. I avoid regular elevators, so I guess it makes sense. Nothing else has ever given me much of an issue though - except trying to get onto the monorail after Wishes. I had to bail from the line and go to the ferry.

I can't do M:S or Sum of all Thrills.... And when the line gets totally backed up right before you get on HM I tend to have a bit of a panic attack, but other than that not much else :)
Except for Main Street after the parade when you get stuck in one spot for 5 minutes, shoved between people.

I am generally an anxious person and can feel panicky in enclosed spaces, over the years my trips to WDW have made me tackle this more. I hated pre-shows and wouldn't go in if it looked too squashed, but as trips went by I realised I was missing out.
Ease yourself in gently IMO, start with bigger spaces and see how you feel, I would never do TT for the first few trips, (general fear, rather than claustrophobia) or EE. I now do both, I try and achieve a new goal each time I go!

When in a small space tell yourself nothing is going to happen, there is enough air for everyone, you are safe, you can do it.

It's funny you mention this. When I was very young(Space Mountain was yet to open) and went to WDW with my parents, we went on Haunted Mansion. Now my Mom was terribly claustrophobic and, being our first time there, we were unaware of the room with no doors feature. When the doors closed and the lights dimmed, I knew something was wrong but I wasn't exactly sure. As soon as the door reopened my Dad grabbed us kids and my Mother and we rushed over to the nearest Cast Member and they kindly escorted my Mom down a hallway and outside. Dad explained to us kids that Mom wasn't feeling well and would meet us outside. Needless to say, Mom did not go on any other rides during our stay at WDW.
