Disney's Tower of Terror

"Two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson will produce Disney's Tower of Terror movie, which will be developed as a starring vehicle for the studio's Black Widow actress, Collider has exclusively learned."

"Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley is currently writing the script, though plot details are being kept under wraps somewhere on the tower's top floor. Johansson will produce via her company These Pictures alongside Jonathan Lia, and though there's no director formally attached yet, Disney will aim high, according to sources -- especially since Johansson is coming off of dual Oscar nominations for her stellar work in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in addition to her high-profile turn in Marvel's Black Widow.

Representatives for Disney and Johansson had no comment."

Not unless they can get a Twilight Zone tie-in with the movie.

I hope they do. It'd be cool if Rod Serling could somehow play a role in this movie (which interests me because some solidly talented people seem to be associated with it). I realize it's controversial, but a CGI-Serling appearing in this new film wouldn't bother me a bit. After all, some trickery was involved in inserted Serling into the ride, and it was done very well - and with his widow's input and approval. I mean, resurrecting dead celebrities for new entertainment venues is gonna keep happening, whether we like it or not. If it's done tastefully and cleverly, and not just as a gimmick, I have no problem with it.

It's probably more reasonable to assume this movie was green lit with a conditional that it not feature anything related to The Twilight Zone... with the sole purpose of using the movie to re-badge the ride based on the movie's adaptation. Cynical perhaps, but realistic.

I find this unlikely given the 2019 update to the Paris Tower of Terror. Even though it isn't as heavily Twilight Zone themed as the original, it still includes it.

I love Rod Serling and Twilight Zone theme of the Tower of Terror....however, the show ended in 1964.

People BORN in 1964 are now 57 years old. The Twilight Zone is still part of pop culture thanks to some more recent iterations like Jordan Peele's, but it's still nowhere near as popular to young people I don't think.

If licensing wasn't an issue they could keep the existing theme, but I don't think Disney is thinking that way.

Considering I liked the made for tv movie, I hope they actually have some TERROR elements in the film considering the name of the ride is Tower of TERROR.

It is now officially cancelled
I wouldn't say the entire project is officially cancelled as there has been no official statement from Disney. But I would put it in the "highly unlikely to happen" category, especially not with ScarJo.

Disney may still move forward on it with another person. In fact given they are trying to create more films from their Park Attractions, including a new Mansion movie, they may still find a way to do this movie as well.

Well, definitely not with ScarJo, it looks like:

I think it’s entirely possible they may restart the project down the line, but as for right now, the current version that was being developed seems to be cancelled.

All these same rumor stories on various sites all comes from the same source, some site called "Giant Freakin Robot". I don't know their track record, but since no other legitimate site has provided independent confirmation I still wouldn't call it actually "cancelled". I'd still put it in the "highly unlikely to happen" or "on-hold" category.

And again I suspect given Disney's push to develop attraction based movies right now, that it'll happen in some form in the future.

I can't say I've read them enough to say for sure (and it doesn't mean this story isn't true), but around the Internet, Giant Freakin Robot has gotten a bad reputation for posting made-up news to get clicks.

Until there is independent confirmation from a legitimate site I wouldn't treat anything they post as anything more than rumor.

Additionally say they do have a real source from inside Disney, things can always change from one minute to the next. That is why I say its in the "highly unlikely to happen" or "on-hold" category.
