Disney's Mediterranean Resort

From what I heard, there may be a new five-star resort being built between the Contemporary Resort and the Transportation and Ticket Center on the Seven Seas Lagoon. The name is said to be Disney's Mediterranean Resort. It is said to be another resort that the monorail stops at at. Also, I heard that it would be even better than the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Does anyone else know more about this?

Welcome to the boards Lenny. If you do a search of the boards there has been talk about this a few times. From what I remember, there was supposed to be resorts themed after all the major lands at the MK. Poly=Adventureland, Fort Wilderness=Frontierland, Grand Floridian=Main Street USA, Contemporary=Tomorrowland and so forth. The hotel you mentioned I believe was to have a European flair to fit with Fantasyland. I might be wrong about this but I do know it was discussed on the boards before.

New Monorail Resort?

That's cool how you figured that out that each hotel around "the loop" resembles each of the lands inside The Magic Kingdom.

However, from a cost perspective, what would it take to build an additional monorail track? Re-route the monorail track?

Also, from a transportation perspective, what contingency plans does Disney have to be able to route guests from the hotels to The Magic Kingdom? Would Disney provide more busses?

I'm trying to figure out how the new "Mediterranean Resort" would have a monorail depot if the existing monorail track system is already in place. The only way I could see this happening is if they take the track apart and build onto it to connect to the station at the "Mediterranean Resort." Which would, I hate to say it, stop monorail services.

But, on the flipside, they could use that time to maintain the track and maybe enhance the monorail stations at other stopping points. :)

I have heard a lot about this resort as well, but I have not heard anything about it commencing. It is exciting, however, to think about Disney creating a five star resort. I mean if we think that the Grand Floridian or the Poly or The Yacht and Beachclubs are nice, this Mediterranean Resort must be AMAZING!:)

Thanks for the compliment but I can't take credit when it isn't due me. I read it on these boards last year sometime. This resort was if I remember correctly, in the plans back in the very early days of WDW. I know someone will remember more than I and will be able to cite chapter and verse on the actual book it appeared in. Some kind of WDW history as I recall.

Hi Lenny. The Mediterranian was to be the grandest WDW resort. It was located on the monorail between the T&TC and the Contemporary (you can make out the land area today) The station would be on the existing allignment, so no track moving would be necessary.

Parts of the edge of seven seas lagoon was to be dug into the resort to make canals and islands, and the last I heard was the ground wasn`t stable enough to build it.... who knows?

I`ve put the plan of the resort in my photo album:

I agree. That has to be the most beautiful hotel in the Disney registry of hotels. Very chic. I can't help but think maybe they're going forward with plans again due to the success of the Hotel Miracosta.

I'm not sure what you mean. The Grand Floridian was built on the existing monorail line. No need to move anything. There's land for a new resort on the line in the same fashion.

There were initial plans to build Asian, Persian, and Venetian themed resorts around the Seven Seas Lagoon. Here's a link to Tikiman's site with illustrations.

It seems like we go thru this every few months. There is a great book by Jeff Kurti called "Since the World Began". Originally there were to have been 4 hotels around the Seven Seas Lagoon:
The Asian Hotel, The Contemporary Resort, The Venitian Resort, and the Polynesian Resort. A fifth hotel was planned, but it's name is not listed.

I'm sure a quick search will bring up the related threads.

tigsmon - the 5th hotel was to be the Persian. Located on the monorail (with different track alignment) between the Contemporary and the Magic Kingdom. It would actually have been on Bay Lake, where the dry dock is today (north east of Space Mountain)

It was in the original phase 2 masterplan but I guess it got cancelled before 1971 as the monorail route was altered to the route it takes today.

The Persian was never planned as a monorail resort. And there hasn't been any alteration to the MK Monorail Loop.

The Mediterranean Resort was originally supposed to open in the 70's and was planned by Roy Disney Sr. (and even Walt Disney himself). But when Card Walker was made CEO after Roy Disney died, the Mediterranean, as well as the Asian, Persian, and Venetian Resorts projects were all shelved because of economic reasons. All of these were to circle the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake, along with the Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts, thus giving the Seven Seas Lagoon, a real sense of "Seven Seas".

These plans were shelved up until the mid-80's, when the powers that be put Eisner in charge under condition of that he make hotel build-out at WDW a top priority. It was decided to build the Grand Floridian at the site where the Asian was supposed to go. New plans for other hotels were then put in place, but the Meditteranean plan from the late 60's somehow stayed on life support, and Eisner's management planned to build it all these years. But somehow it kept being postponed for one reason or another. For example, twice it was postponed because of recessions and Disney decided to build "economic" resorts (All Stars and Pop Century) instead. A few years ago, they were even surveying the site, ready to build, but the land it was going was "unstable", so construction never started.

I guess they are still planning on building it. Talk about a project that's been in the waiting for a while!!!! We're talking over 30 years that its been in the planning stages!!!!

I would love it if the Mediterranean resort got built. I call the Grand Floridian the last of Disney's "great" resorts. Sure, they built the WL and AKL after that, but am I the only one who thinks they are kind of the same hotel just with different themes? I don't know. The Mediterranean would be great, a resort that is like no other. But something tells me it's going to be a long time before they ever build another hotel on the monorail. :(

Sorry Bill - the Persian was on the >original< monorail route. Take a look at the 1969/70 concept art, the monorail went due north from the Contemporary, thru the Persian station, then the main line swung back west then south, through Tomorrowland and the raceway (like DLC) to the MK station.

Universal has Portofino...I don't like the idea of Disney doing a hotel like the Miracosta at Tokyo Disney it resembles Portofino too much....besides I don't think MK area needs another resort.

I think another resort is needed near AK, that area is very desolate and in need of some LIFE....just my opinion...
