Disney's Half-A***D Approach

Okay, so I know now posting this I am going to catch a lot of flack for what I'm about to say. But that's okay, I need to speak my peace and I value what anyone will comment on. So here goes.
I have been a Disney fan since birth. I was raised on those old book/album Disney stories when turn the page at the chimes. I've seen every Disney movie and been to Disney World and Disneyland many many times. I even proposed to my wife in Disney World. But everything Disney has lost its magic to me, and I'm fed up with it.
Almost every true Disney fan cursed out the name Michael Eisner, saying he was killing the park as CEO. However, since Eisner's dismount as CEO of Disney and Iger's subsequent empowerment, Disney to me has taken a nosedive, and I feel I can't sit by, quietly watching the company I grew up on, the company that has had a bigger impact on my life than any other company out there, fall to ruins.
To me, Iger has been slowly destroying this company since his takeover. The most recent occurrence of this has been the Disney CMO contest on Careerbuilder.com. As anyone who tried to submit an application during the last phase of the contest knows, Disney really didn't put the magic into this. Applicants fell victim to a frustrating contest entry process, involving a website that Careerbuilder itself acknowledge as having problems. Speaking for myself, trying to apply to the contest and having spent several several days on my application video only to be met by a webpage riddled with faults was heartbreaking. But where was Disney in all this? Passing the buck off to Careerbuilder, who promised they would rectify the problem and ensure that all those met by problematic websites would be granted another opportunity to fulfill their opportunity of a dream job as CMO. Yet Careertbuilder never did quite follow through with this promise as several individuals were not able to resubmit their rightful applications.
So you might say, well, this is Careerbuilder's fault, not Disney's. Been to the DisneyCareers webpage lately? Good luck navigating through there. It' in total chaos as the order of the positions available are in alphabetical order. That would be fine if you're looking for a specific position, but without any type of order of when job postings expire, there's no way to keep up on which postings are current. Trying to perform a job search on there is nearly impossible. In addition, the fonts are all over the place, and trying to read through each individual page is a difficult task at that.
So you might be saying to yourself, well, I don't care about either of these sites. I really love Disney for the parks. Okay, well, I ask you, where's the imagination gone in the parks? What about the rides? Toy Story Mania? I've ridden this ride before, it was called Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, and then it was called Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters. Where is the imagination? All this comes out to be is another corporation force feeding what they believe to be a decent product down our throats simply because it is what is convenient for them. Why bother being creative any more? Here's an idea, let's take a character very few appreciate, close an attraction lots of people like, and cram that character down the throats of those who dislike him, simply because we are too lazy to come up with some sort of creative idea that will be appealing to the masses. Everyone likes Alien Encounter, so let's close it and put in Stitch. Just be sure to ignore all those complaints from long time fans. Timekeeper? Well, too many people love that attraction. Let's put in another Pixar attraction. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? Well, time for a crappy, poorly themed play area that attracts about 1/25th of the people we bring into this park everyday and say that it costs too much for a billion dollar company to maintain the original attraction.
You might see me as just some person that hates Disney. But that is far from the truth. I'm just someone who has come to see that Disney just doesn't care about me or you. All they care about is the hard earned money you have sitting in your wallet and trying to find new ways to make that money their's. Disney does not care about you or me. It is just a cold hearted corporation that cares only about its board members and majority stock holders. The family in Disney died with Walt. Now all that is left is a shell of a dream filled with selfish investors and greedy power hungry executives. And it's sad to say that the savior many of us saw in Bob Iger is absolutely no better of an individual than Michael Eisner was.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've sent two emails to Careerbuilder with absolutely zero help. Just the standard reply others have received. But the frustration goes so much deeper. It's trying to apply for jobs with Disney, and never receiving a response (We're talking well over 200 applications, and I can honestly say that most have been jobs I'm qualified for). That was when the DisneyCareers website was actually able to be navigated through.
It just seems Disney lately has such a disregard for the people that make this company special and I'm just fed up with the lack of magic the most magical company on Earth has for us all.

Well, I have to say that Disney and Careerbuilder should really extend the deadline if the site had problems. I have a feeling many people put in a lot of work and it would be unprofessional for them not to fix the situation. Of course you could always apply for a job the conventional way too. They definitely need people as passionate and visionary as you. Good luck.

Not to be flip or anything, but why would you want to be CMO if you have such strong negative opinions?

I agree with the OP that DisneyCareers can be awkward. Disney has a track record of technical problems and glitches. I experienced one when I booked my last trip.

I would suggest phone calls over e-mails. It's too easy to write e-mails than it is to talk with someone.

Anywho... I hope this works out for you. I know these are frustrating times for the Disney faithful.

While I have yet to reach the point of "too much Disney" and don't expect I ever will... Perhaps you need a break from it.

There is lots to enjoy for myself and DS12. Is everything exactly to my liking? No, but I have no expectation that any company could design and implement a full set of amazing parks that was perfectly aligned to every individual's expectations. But what there is keeps me very well entertained for several days a number of times a year. I wouldn't ask for more.

That was very well stated, and could easily fit into several threads on this board.

I too can relate to the frustration of trying to navigate the various web sites within the world of Disney. Both job related and the main web site. It's frustrating to spend a large chunk of time and effort on a job application only to have the site malfunction and you lose all of your work. This happened to me recently. I had to start over completely, and I doubt I did as good of a job the second time around.

I do wish the various web sites related to Disney were kept up better than they are.

Very true.

I could write a scathing article about the parks, but I bet you I would still go. I realize things are wrong, but so many things are right.

Why would I want to be CMO if I feel that way...good question. My only answer is that I'm like anyone else here. I want to believe in the magic more than anything. It just seems Disney has let the magic fade in ways for the company to make more money. And it always seems like it us that pay for it. Like I said, I've been a devout fan of Disney. Heck, I was even in College Road Trip. But even there was a ridiculous joke of how Disney cuts corners. It took six months for me to get paid by the company Disney used for casting. Granted, while not Disney's fault, it shows how Disney uses second rate companies, brands their name to it, and ends up with a faulty product in the end that we, the everyday consumers who essentially trust all that is Disney, end up suffering from.

I understand your frustration. However, could it be that your irritation over the whole careerbuilders thing is coloring everything else? I mean, really, since Bob Iger took over things haven't been in a nosedive. He brought Pixar back to Disney. He has John Lasseter in charge of Animation in general. Hand drawn animation is coming back. There are lots and lots of improvements happening and coming to the parks. Hopefully you can put the whole careerbuilder behind you and try to enjoy the rest of Disney.

Sorry, can't agree with you

Haven't paid any attention to the CMO deal, so can't comment on that. Sorry if you had website issues with that. However, IMHO, the "family" in Disney did not die with Walt...to me, the fact that they have updated rides & attractions to include characters that have become increasingly popular over the last 20 years proves they still strive to provide varied attractions for all the ages visiting Disney parks.

"a character very few appreciate"...may be true for some of the adult crowd, but last May, judging from the always-present lines for Buzz Lightyear, it was obvious the ride & character was very appreciated by pre-school through teens & their parents. I call that a "family" ride. I saw the same delight & appeal with the Stitch character--older folks may not enjoy it, but the kids that were on it when we were there obviously loved it.

And the submarine going...first, let me say, I liked the 20,000 Leagues submarine, too...but I grew up on the 1954 Disney movie (and saw the original 20,000 Leagues movie on Disney's Sunday night program in the 1960's...that movie connection/ride concept is now more than 50 years old.) How many of today's kids would have seen the movie to make any connection to the submarine ride?

And replacing it with a "poorly themed play area"? What? I was in the childcare business for 20 years...Winnie the Pooh was universally loved by all the kids I knew, boys & girls. When we were there, the Pooh playground seemed to be quite popular & greatly appreciated by the young families taking advantage of a beloved character-themed play area. The looks of delight on the kids' faces when they spotted the various items & characters from Pooh was worth a million bucks, and they obviously loved that they could climb on, slide, etc. instead of just look at decor while they stand in line for a ride. Lots of teens & adults were around the playground too , using the playground pieces for fun, nostalgic photo backdrops. I just wish that it had been there when my kids were little. Sure, the playground took space out for "just little kids", but there are also plenty of attractions that are aimed at just older kids & adults, too, so I think it all balances out. I believe most people would agree that putting in a playground is "family" oriented.

On the attractions that you say have no imagination, just look at kids faces next time your there. They say it all. Disney World is is geared for kids, but it has that magical appeal where adults love it too. What other park across middle America has a ride like Buzz, Stitch, or the yet to be opened Toy Story Mania?

I always put myself in kid mode when I am there. For me it is still the most magical experience anywhere.

Could they improve certain rides or processes? Of course they can. Should we be advocates for a better Disney? Yes we should. But I don't think I will ever get tired of that place.

So careerbuilder.com some how made you curse at the Walt Disney Company? I couldn't quite read the whole thing, but if you are up for the challenge, the effort put into navigating the site shouldn't bother you too much.... Who knows, may be intentional.... weed out the bad... well... weeds.

You have valid points, and an opinion is an opinion, so I won't criticize you on that. However, sometimes people do not hold themselves responsible enough for their actions and their feelings. Like I just told my dear friend MKT- you have a choice when presented with a situation you don't like. You can cry, whine, complain, pity me, throw tantrums or boycott Disney, (not implying you did all of the above, but many do), or you can accept that some things are how they are, and no amount of your crying will do anything about it. So if you feel Disney has lost the magic, you might reexamine your thinking and your reactions to the problems you mentioned. Sure, there's website issues both within Disney domain and outside..... But can you still meet Mickey Mouse at the parks? Is Cinderella castle still standing? Are CMs still wonderful, patient, willing to help, there to make your vacation enjoyable? Does Disney still put out good entertainment in their shows, parades, presentation of the parks, etc. YES! From every individual person to every world-wide corporation, we all have our short comings and mistakes. So when you drive under that Walt Disney World archway, you can say, "they can't handle a website, I can't get hired there, and this park has completely changed from when I was a kid...." or you can say "you know what, this park is still here and many people work very hard in order for me and my family and friends to enjoy ourselves together, and this is an experience that many people aren't lucky enough to enjoy- so I'm going to get over Disney's mistakes, and make this a fantastic vacation"

Heck, when I go to work and walk into those utilidors that reek of garbage, pipes all over the place, cement as far as the eye can see, weird colored lighting, and golf carts that I swear sometimes try to plow you over..... it's pure joy that can't be explained- true magic, and a place that feels like home. And I know that sounds cheesy, but it's 100% true. and believe me, there's nothing magical about those tunnels......

But again..... just my opinion. I'm one of those who believes "there's no use crying over spilled milk" and if you can't change things, then accept them how they are and make the best of the situation.

You know, that is so true. While I was a CT, I spent 6 years in the navy. When I got out and returned to WDW, walking back into the Tunnel felt eerily like coming home.

There are a lot of problems, but there are a lot of wonderful moments that I wouldn't trade for the world, so I won't waste time focusing on the bad stuff. I don't ignore it, if there is some way I can improve myself or my situation, I will, but I don't let it destroy me.

Thank you for sharing that.

That smell in the tunnels is just garbage? I thought it was sewage.

Still, wouldn't have traded the job for anything in the world. Well, except my physical health which is why I... er, traded the job. Huh.
