Disney's "Cheetah" leaves all shows in dust

"The Cheetah Girls 2" is off and running at Disney Channel, where the original cable TV movie amassed 7.8 million total viewers Friday -- more than any program on TV that day.

"Cheetah" even blazed past the debut of Disney's "High School Musical," the pop-culture phenomenon that drew 7.7 million viewers in January.

While it's the highest-rated original movie on the network in total viewers, it fell short of breaking the mark in the key demos of kids 6-11 and 9-14, where the 2002 film "Cadet Kelly" still rules.

"Cheetah," which stars Disney star Raven-Symone ("That's So Raven") as a member of an all-girl band that travels to Spain, exceeded all broadcast competition that day, with CBS series "Numbers" a distant second with 6 million.

"Cheetah" also propelled Disney to its most-watched total day and primetime ever in total viewers. The movie scored a massive 61 national share in the girls 9-11 demo.

I guess that they will start to drive this into the ground, like they do everything else on TDC.

Don't get me wrong: I actually like that fact that good, family films do so well. I just wish that the Disney Channel would learn the sometimes less is more. Keeping them wanting more... and in the meantime, keep the variety on the channel.

Check out this article at E! Online. It seems they did very well.

I thought it was a pretty uneven picture...I felt bad for the poor tall girl who's only real contribution to the film was making jokes about eating a lot of food. It was entertaining, but I kept being surprised about how low budget it felt. Quite the opposite of, obviously, a theatrical release like "The Lizzy Maguire Movie", which actually had a bit in common with this film theme wise.

Were they really in Spain very much? Most of the Spain scenes felt like they were on a soundstage. Also had a very compressed cast (only two parents, etc).

There I go, dissing it again...it wasn't bad, and I haven't deleted it off the TiVo yet...but I don't think I'll be picking up the DVD.

I think the only thing that is safe to assume, however, is that this is not the last Cheetah-licious film we'll see from these ladies.

Disney Channel Original Movies don't usually have a major budget. But enough so it doesn't look cheap. I think many scenes were done in a sound stage, since it would have been very expensive to shoot on location in Spain. But maybe that is why it seemed like it didn't have a big budget, because they spent all the money going to Spain. ;) They left out some people from the last movie, and just took the important ones for this film. I think they will make a Cheetah's 3. I think the biggest problem is Raven-Symone's schedule. It's not like she feels she's too good for the Cheetah girls, it is just that Raven is busy promoting her own music.
