Disneyland trip planning for a CM

Looking for some advice for planning a Disneyland trip this summer coming from Orlando. I know it’s not the easiest when it comes to reservations for a hotel and flight since they pretty much need to be booked at the same time. One of the issues I’m facing is my friend, who is a WDW CM, doesn’t know if he would get the time off. I know his schedule has been crazy working at DHS, but Im not personally sure how CMs vacation time works or how far in advance they can get approval for time off? So the challenge is when should we make reservations since he probably wouldn’t know about time off until maybe the month of? If we wait until the month of, or last minute, my concern is we will be paying a ridiculous amount for a on site hotel and flight, assuming we can even find one?

My second question is, does anyone have advice for a airline that is typically the cheapest and best choice for flying from Orlando to Disneyland? Also which airport is best to fly into?

As a foreigner we’ve always flown into Santa Ana / John Wayne. Half an hour from DL. And far less chaotic than LAX (much closer too)

Since I do not fly often, does anyone know, no a days, if it’s better to book a flight way in advance to get a good deal? Or can you do it last minute, like a few weeks before your trip and still find a good deal?

Also what is the best airline? To John Wayne Airport?
