Disneyland Thrill Rides

I, myself, am a huge thrill ride fan. I'll go on anything and everything. My wife on the other hand, shes kind of a wuss (love her to death, though!). We've been to WDW many times and are heading out to DL for the first time at the end of this week! I'm trying to get an idea of what I think she can handle. For reference, she can do Big Thunder Mtn out in WDW and she loves Splash Mountain. There is no hope of getting her on ToT. I'm pretty sure she can't do Indiana Jones (shes never tried Dinosaur in WDW). So really, the only ones i think she might have a chance with is Space Mtn and the Matterhorn. Any thoughts? Specifically Space Mtn, how does that compare? I've heard its a lot smoother of a ride, and she could probably do ok if its smooth...

Thanks in advance!

Which part of thrill rides does she fear the most?
Matterhorn is extremely rough and bumpy. It is not very fast and doesn't really have drops. It only has a 35" height requirement, so 4 year olds go on it.
As you mentioned, Indiana Jones is similar to Dinosaur. Have her walk through the queue with you and then exit through the vehicle. The queue is worth seeing even if she doesn't ride.
Space Mountain is smooth, but it seems fast.
It starts by going up a large hill for a long time. Then it pretty much comes down that hill with lots of turns and one teeny tiny drop. It is like riding a spiral down. As with most roller coasters, the front is a little slower. It is also specially themed for Halloween, so that might make it extra scary for her. If she doesn't ride it, stand outside her with at night and watch the creature try to escape from inside of Space Mountain.
BTMRR and Splash are clones, so she can ride both of those.

Thanks for the reply! Shes ok with speed for the most part, she just really doesnt like spinning, going backwards or upside down. Sometimes she will wait in line with me, but other times shes afraid she will get to the front of the line, and they wont let her not ride! Sounds like the Matterhorn may not work for her if its really bumpy (thats the reason she wont ride SM out in WDW), but i may try to convince her to give SM in DL a shot.

My two cents

I would say she would be fine on Indiana Jones, you guys really shouldn't miss that one. If she's okay on Big Thunder, then Indiana Jones will not be a problem.

As for Space Mountain, I disagree with the person who posted before me. I thought it was really thrilling--much more thrilling than the WDW version in my opinion. In fact, it is now my favorite roller coaster and I think the WDW version is pretty lame. The drops aren't incredible--the whole package just combines to make for a pretty intense experience. And this is someone who will go on any roller coaster.

We skipped Matterhorn-it didn't look so great. I would say California Screamin' is definitely out for her--although I thought it was a blast.

Make sure you go on Pirates of the Carribbean and the Haunted Mansion. I just thought they were in amazing condition and blew the roof off of the WDW versions.

Have a great time.

If she is not a big fan of thrills, I personally never went to dl but saw all the vids the last couple of days. Should be able to do Big thunder, matterhorn, Grizzley River Rapids, Indy, splash, space and pirates. But all the rest will possiblly be to rough.

As others have said, Indy should definitely be do'able! If she can handle Thunder Mountain it will be no problem (unless she has neck problems...it can be pretty jerky at times.) :)

Space Mountain at DL is, IMO, a pretty intense ride. Not because the coaster layout itself is actually intense (it's smooth as butter and pretty tame to most coasters), but the darkness can really play tricks on your mind especially if you're not a thrill junkie! Plus, if you're going this week, Ghostly Galaxy will be going on and they manage to really up the thrills just by placing some scary effects and making things a lot darker inside.

Matterhorn isn't very scary, but it can be an uncomfortable ride as it's from 1959 and they hadn't quite perfected steel coasters yet considering it's the first steel coaster. :) Still lots of fun if you can endure it!!

In my opinion, DL's Space Mountain is much smoother that its WDW counterpart.
Not saying it better. I actually like the single seating version at WDW. But it certainly feels much smoother to me.

Matterhorn, however, is far from smooth. You'll be bouncing around for sure.
I love it..........it's a classic.........but it can beat you up!
