>>Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will reopen in April and recall 10,000 furloughed employees following a year of closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Disney officials.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced during the company’s annual shareholder meeting Tuesday, March 9 that Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will reopen in late April.

“Here in California, we’re encouraged by the positive trends we’re seeing and we’re hopeful they’ll continue to improve and we’ll be able to reopen our parks to guests with limited capacity by late April,” Chapek said. “We look forward to publicizing an opening date in the coming weeks.”

California theme parks have been closed since March 2020 under COVID-19 health and safety reopening guidelines issued by the state.

“While last week’s announcement stated that theme parks may open starting on April 1, the fact is it will take some time to get them ready for our guests,” Chapek said. “This includes recalling more than 10,000 furloughed cast and retraining them to be able to operate according to the state of California’s new requirements.”

In April, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products furloughed non-essential executives, salaried and non-union hourly employees at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts due to continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disney laid off 28,000 employees in September at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. An exact count of the layoffs at the Disneyland resort was not available, but estimates put the number at approximately 10,000 employees.

About 37,000 Disney employees were on furlough as of Oct. 3, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing by the company.

“I’m pleased to say the response has been great thus far,” Chapek said. “Our cast members are excited to get back to work.”

Anaheim officials said in September that the coronavirus closures of Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center had led to a $100 million shortfall in city coffers.

“This is also good news for the Anaheim community, which depends on Disneyland for jobs and business generated by visitors,” Chapek said.

Chapek did not narrow the opening dates for Disneyland and DCA beyond “late April.” The delayed reopening for Disney’s Anaheim theme parks is not surprising. Disney moved cautiously last summer and reopened its four Florida parks after its rivals.

The Walt Disney World resort deployed a phased reopening plan when the four Florida theme parks returned last summer. Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom theme parks reopened on July 11 while the Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios parks reopened on July 15.

When could Disneyland and DCA reopen?

Disney has announced a DCA food festival that hasn’t begun yet. A Touch of Disney runs on select dates from March 18 to April 19 at Disney California Adventure. Disneyland remained shuttered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disney California Adventure could return to full operation on April 20 after A Touch of Disney concludes. Disneyland could reopen sooner than DCA. Disney could decide to use a phased reopening plan in Anaheim and open Disneyland and DCA on staggered dates.<<

I know people have shared this same sentiment on the forums for a while now but I can not even fathom how difficult it will be for Disney to reopen the resort after being closed for over a year. I am very very curious what the park operations will look like when they reopen, I am sure they have a lot of things to touch up / some maintenance to do on top of retraining all the CMs as they would have been gone for over a year by that point. This will be very interesting to watch and hopefully hear how things are going.

I envision al of the Disney execs sitting around eating popcorn and watching Netflix when the call comes in that the parks have the greenlight to open...fairly certain they have their Disney Ducks lined up and ready to roll (waddle) out. As for CM, yeah, training and all that but the rest...nah, they're prepped and preened for this day.

And good news on moving out of the Purple Tier to reopen.

>>
Happy Tuesday, Anaheim! We’re pleased to share another positive update that reflects how far we’ve come in reducing the spread of coronavirus following the winter surge.

While the progress is welcome, we continue to be reminded how deadly this virus is. Our hearts are with everyone who has lost a friend or family member to COVID-19.

While the positivity rate and case rates are moving in the right direction, we’re slated to stay in purple Tier 1 for another week. It’s our hope to see movement to red Tier 2 announced on March 16, which among other things, would allow indoor operations at restaurants, movie theaters and gyms.

Keep up the great work fighting COVID, Anaheim!

Here's your summary for March 9:
* Anaheim cases: 16 cases, with three among children, for a running total of 41,098
* Anaheim deaths: eight; running total of 761
* OC cases: 108 new cases, for a running total of 248,022
* OC deaths reported: 61; running total of 4,313
* OC tests: 6,052; running total of 3,125,408
* OC hospitalizations: 283, down from 288
* OC ICU: 77, down from 84
* OC ventilators available: 68 percent, unchanged
* OC ICU beds available: 34.7 percent, up<<

Now I'm curious to hear how and when the reservation system will open up. Will on-site guests get priority? I'm definitely going to try my luck for opening day but don't have very high expectations for getting that.

I imagine there will be separate pools of available reservations for on-site guests and individual ticket holders. Maybe staying at the GCH will be able to nearly guarantee you admission to the park? Back in June of last year, there was someone on this forum that was able to get access to the unreleased reservation website, showing the different pools, how you could link and connect tickets, and the possibility of staggered arriving times, in which you’d have to select when you plan on first entering the park. That could change for this time around, but I imagine they’ll keep most of it around as they’ve already developed the system.

Who knows if the Hotels will even be open in April? The only thing we do know is that the DVC units will reopen in May,

Great news!!! I'm thrilled for those 10,000 CM's that can go back to work! 🥳

It's long past time to restart the great economic engine known as the Anaheim Resort District.

It's going to be creaky and cranky at first, and nothing like this has ever been attempted. But a year from now it will all be in the rearview mirror and Disneyland will be not only a source of joy and inspiration to all the world, but it will be an important part of the mighty and diverse economy that Orange County needs.

So how many had been laid off? 15k or so? I want to say the full cast is 30k so they’d be starting with 25k?

That's a great question. It has been said that there were 31,000 CM's working at the Disneyland Resort back in January, 2020.

Then there were mass layoffs, several waves of them. How many thousands at Disneyland Resort were permanently laid off in 2020? 5,000? 7,000? 10,000?

How many are still left on the payroll right now? How many are still on furlough? Does this new recall of 10,000 CM's bring every furloughed CM back next month? Or does that still leave a few thousand CM's still on furlough?

Lots of questions there we just don't know. My guess is that at least one third of the original 31,000 CM's are permanently gone, either through layoffs or by simply moving away or finding another job while they were on indefinite furlough for a year.

I would guess that a chunk of the furloughed CM's who are officially still on the books won't return when Disney's HR department gives them a call this week. Who knows what the final tally will be a few months from now on who is left and who is gone?

I really don't like the idea of staggered arriving times! Not a deal breaker but I would hate to have the first day back even shorter than what I am assuming is already shortened hours.

Good point. I really can't wait to see how they work this out!

I'm imagining my first visit back will be much like one of my last visits before it closed; my early morning Uber and breakfast at the International House of Pancakes in order to secure a boarding group for Star Wars: Rise Before Dawn. Then going up on the Railroad platform to point my phone directly at Telstar to help AT&T deliver a strong signal. :D

I'm going to Uber and avoid the parking nightmares. But I would hate to get a later arrival time and have my day shortened. How will they handle that? This will be very interesting to see how they do all this.

Do we know if there was any system of mass retraining when WDW opened up? I know the timeframe for closure was much, much shorter, and different states have different regulations, but I'm hoping/thinking Disney isn't 100% green here.
