How exciting! October is a great time to visit. Don't miss all of those Only-In-Disneyland rides like:
StorybookLand Canal Boats
Casey Jr. Circus Train
Alice In Wonderland
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
Pinnochio's Daring Journey (also in Tokyo)
Matterhorn Bobsleds
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin
Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes (also in Tokyo)
Sailing Ship Columbia
Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Tarzan's Treehouse
Enchanted Tiki Room (original 1963 show)

Or the classic rides that are much different at Disneyland like:
Pirates of the Caribbean (8 extra minutes)
Haunted Mansion Holiday (surely you've heard of this)
Space Mountain (music and 21st century technology)
Autopia
Jungle Cruise (pirahnas! dynamite! animatronics that move!)

Even poor, unloved DCA has a few noted exclusives you won't find in Florida:
Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley To The Rescue
Alladin stage show in Hyperion Theatre (generally excellent)
California Screamin'
Seasons of the Vine (I love this little movie!)
Disney Animation pavilion (Animation Academy is a blast)

And a few rides in DCA are different enough from WDW to be noticeable:
Grizzly River Run (longer, wilder than Kali)
Tower of Terror (Will you miss the Fifth Dimension Room?)

Take an afternoon or evening to stroll Downtown Disney. My favorite places for meals are:
Catal (Excellent California-Continental cuisine)
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen (good New Orleans food, great live jazz)
ESPNZone (surprisingly good comfort food in their restaurants, entire facility is a can't-miss for sports fans)
UVA Bar (great for a burger and beer, California style)

I've not had good luck at the following Downtown Disney restaurants:
Tortilla Jo's (spotty service, spottier food quality)
Naples Ristorante (downright poor service, so-so pizza and food)
Rainforest Cafe (These are in every major mall in America. Noisy. Frantic. Avoid it like the plague unless your children INSIST.)

At the Grand Californian, maybe try Storyteller's Cafe for an alternative to Downtown Disney dining. And then of course there is Napa Rose, easily the best restaurant in the North American Disney Empire. If you aren't up for spending that kind of money, maybe just stop by for a drink and their excellent cheese sampler platter or other appetizer in their adjoining Cocktail Lounge. You get the atmosphere and service, without the huge price tag. Take a stroll to the restroom to check out the open-kitchen dining room when you are there, and then you can say you've done Napa Rose without paying 200 dollars for dinner.

Disneyland Hotel is fun to stroll through, if only for all of the wonderful old photos from the 1950's, 60's and 70's located just off the check-in lobby. Pictures of all the biggest names of the 20th century visiting Disneyland, many with Walt in them. They have some fun displays of old souvenirs and kitschy Disneyland memorabilia near the Grand Ballroom too. Worth a look for Disney fans.

Hope you have fun!

Wow! Thanks for all of the great info!

It will be myself and DS ages 11 and 8, so we will be skipping all of the fancy places to eat.......maybe another time I can try them.

I hope I can convince the kids to do ToT there, it freaked them out at WDW a couple of years ago and I haven't heard the end of it
