Disneyland Packs 'Em In = No More Discounts

The Orange County Register has a story today about the sudden lack of the traditional 2Fer1 tickets for locals that had been rolled out every year since 2003 for Disneyland and DCA.

Blame Cars Land, as the Resort is packed with full fare paying tourists and there's no longer a need to offer locals discounts in the "off season" any more. http://www.ocregister.com/entertainment/california-496298-disney-disneyland.html

No real surprise there. The Disneyland Resort is packed, hotels are full, people are happy, the money is pouring in.

This quote in the article from Disney CFO Jay Rasulo caught my eye...

The Anaheim parks had much stronger surges than did Florida's Walt Disney World in late summer and fall.
"The great success of Cars Land, both from a quality and from a quantity perspective in terms of attendance and pricing, has reflected itself in Disneyland Resort greatly outgrowing Walt Disney World," said Jay Rasulo, the company's financial officer, in a November conference call with investors.
As a result, Disney is offering Florida residents their own local deal this spring: A three-day, local ticket is selling for $119. Normal three-day tickets cost $242.
In Anaheim, though, Southern California residents get the same promotion as everyone else: A three-day ticket for $220.

Who could've ever thunk it! At DCA?!? o_O

Oh, how the tables have turned!

I never thought California Adventure would be the reason for the DLR's success. I guess the DLR is a worthy vacation and not just some local joint.;)

I know, right?! I swear, if you had told me this would happen a decade ago I would have laughed my mouse ears off. DCA is driving Anaheim's record success, capacity hotel occupancy of the 20,000 Anaheim hotel rooms, and consistently huge crowds? DCA? D.C.A.???? The place where you watch bread bake?

This other quote from the article makes me very curious to see the unofficially official TEA industry attendance numbers come in a few months from now for 2012. And then for the full year for 2013 the numbers will even skew far more bizarrely.

"Until last year, the 12-year-old park struggled to draw tourists and keep up with next door's Disneyland. Now, attendance usually is equally split between Disney California Adventure and Disneyland."

Woah! Equally split now? I imagine the Resort attendance overall will go up a bit, but that Disneyland's attendance will decline slightly in 2012 while DCA's skyrockets by several million. And if that trend holds through 2013 then Disneyland's attendance will slide again, while DCA's notches up higher for a second year by a million or two. The Resort gains attendance overall, and from the lucrative multi-day tourist demographic, but Disneyland Park's specific attendance will actually decline in '12 and '13. Very, very interesting!

Seriously! I swear, I hated DCA when it first opened. The hate continued for years, until around 2007, 2008. Things were getting better then, but I still spent most of my time at Disneyland. Now I can easily spend an entire day at the park.:)

The attendance numbers will be VERY interesting not only for this year, but for the next few years. Of course, Disneyland's attendance is expected to drop this year and maybe even next year... But 2015 is the 60th anniversary, or birthday. I'm sure Disney's got something up their sleeves for that very special celebration, and I would imagine Disneyland's attendance to go back up, as well as California Adventure's. We shall see!

Keep Moving Forward
If they build Carsland in Florida the DL will lose part of it's travelers. People planning trip will just wait and got to WDW. This success at DL is a reason not to built Carland in Florida.

When I went for the first time last summer, I said that DCA might be the best Disney Park I've seen.

Wish I was there now instead of here in PA on a 33degree rainy/sleety afternoon.
High wind warning with a wind chill around 0 tonight in WNY. I know how you feel, friend.
