Hello all! I am so excited to be a new member! I am a single mother (27) taking my daughter (to turn 6 the day we leave) from August 24-30, 2013. We are flying from Richmond, VA and using Disney's magical express along with Disney transportation for the length of our stay. Our itinerary is as follows:

Sat, Aug 24th- arrive at resort about 2pm, Campfire sing-along with Chip & Dale at 8pm
Sun, Aug 25th- get to MK before opening to see rope drop, leave after lunch for a break, head back and finish night with Electrical parade and Wishes
Mon, Aug 26th- 8:35am breakfast at Akershus, tour Epcot leave park after lunch for break, finish day with Illuminations
Tues, Aug 27th- arrive at HS for opening, mid-day break, back for Pixar parade at 3pm, Chef Mickey dinner at 6:25, catch Fantasmic after dinner
Wed, Aug 28th- arrive at AK for opening, mid-day break, Jungle parade at 3:45pm, finish day at Downtown Disney
Thurs, Aug 29th- get all dressed up and fancy in the room and head to Grand Floridian for Princess Tea at 10:30am. Catch Dream Come True parade in MK at 3pm, her choice for rest of evening
Fri, Aug 30th- leave for airport by 9am

As you can see I have most everything planned out and will definitely be getting us first timer buttons (both of our firsts) and a birthday button for her. My main questions are about saving money on dining as we are not doing a plan because she does not eat much at all and is very picky so we will most likely share most meals or eat in resort. Need to have some groceries at resort and ideas on best QS meals at each park.

Also I have several gift/souvenirs I have already purchased which she will find each morning when she awakes, but would like something there for when she arrives. have checked out the florist and it is too expensive.

I would love any ideas you have for our times when nothing is scheduled, also must see/do/eat things in parks. Also, how do you handle your park bags on rides which might be wet? I will have my very expensive camera with me, is there storage while on the ride?

Sorry so g and thank you in advance!!! We cannot wait!

In my opinion ……your daughters first time there is going to be incredibly magical. I don’t think I would bother with the surprise in the room upon arrival, just let her soak up “Walt Disney World” It’s AMAZING no extra surprises necessary!

I think you may be right. The more I think about it, the more I feel she will be overwhelmed anyway. It will be a lot of new and a lot of firsts!

Downtown Disney has Earl of Sandwich which is a cheap QS restaurant that is actually very tasty. I always recommend it to those visiting DD.What exactly are you looking for in your meals, allergies, ect.?

Normally if you call the resort and tell them you have a birthday, they will gladly accommodate you with some cheap (sometimes free options) just give them a call and see what they say.

Congrats on your trip! Your daughter is the perfect age for everything Disney. Just have fun and take it all in. I do agree that you don't need to spend money on paying for any surprise items in the room because just being at any resort is a big enough surprise and a lot to take in. I am still amazed by the detail at the resorts and I am 26! As far a picky eater...I have one! He mainly ate uncrustables our entire last trip. So I started freezing them and packing them in my bag for the day. They cost 2.50 at the resort and 6$ at the park because they come with a whole kids meal. I just packed some juice boxes and snacks for him to accompany his pbj to save a few dollars. Kids meals at the resorts come with a juice box or milk. That will be something to save for later if you get the resort mugs. The resort mugs are refillable mugs that make it a one time cost. They cost 15$ and you can refill them all the days you are there at your resort. You can fill them with Coke products, coffee and iced tea. The pin idea is also great and I have ordered them online for cheap ahead of time. They are a big deal once you get there and trading would be fun for her. That is an easy thing to pack since you are flying!. Earl of Sandwich at dowtown disney is my favorite quick service. They have delicious subs and they even have some good kids items and they are super cheap! Don't go overboard with souvenirs. Hit up a Disney outlet before you go and get your autograph book and Disney pen on sale or clearance. I even get some items the parks sell at my outlet and it saves some money. Oh and I am a fellow Raven fan too! Watching NFL network as I type lol! Have a great trip : )

I thought about the uncrustables thing, but my daughter will not eat jelly! ha ha so I think I will just have a loaf of bread and jar of peanut butter and make a few "sandwiches" to bring along in the parks. We did get a resort mug with our package so that will be a plus for drinks besides the water bottles we are going to have a ton of.

I have heard a lot of you recommend Earl of Sandwich so I think we will definitely be heading there!

I have a lot of souvenirs I pre-bought. She will have an allotted amount of money she can spend on something she really wants at the park, other than that I think what I already have and all our special character shirts we have gotten for our trip will be enough. Plus she gets a doll at the princess tea so she should be set.

I have also purchased the encyclopedia of animated characters which will stand as her autograph book and I am making her a passport to get happy birthday wishes in from the different countries. This will also be a plus on the learning side since she will miss the first week of school. She can take it to her teacher and show her all she saw and learned :)

We have a little Ravens community going on here! YAY!!!

Woah, I assumed I should not give advice because you never actually requested any. But since everyone else is, it's my turn!

Walt Disney world is hot, muggy, and rainy in August. That is one reason why you see so many discounts or promotions during that month. I'd bring mini fans that you buy at the Supermarket or Walmart. They are about 3 dollars, its worth it! And you won't be the group of people fighting to stand by the nearest fan to keep cool! :D

I'd bring Jackets, it can get cool when it rains,so a sweatshirt would be nice to have sometimes! Or it might just remain humid, depends...

When I said "My dad had expensive camera once...;)" I was hinting to you to NOT bring it. It'll be a burden and something your constantly worrying about. Disney does offer compartments and cubbies to place your loose items, but its just to much of a risk to forget or have it stolen. I'd take your cheaper camera (if you have one) or don't bring one at all. Rides such as ToT suck when you are trying to keep a bag from flying away, or a camera from smashing into to the ceiling. Take as little as you can to the park and bring nothing expensive. Disney is VERY high on security, but having a panic attack about where your purse went, is no fun. Minimize is the answer.

Keep the walking to a minimum for your daughter! Trying to get from Dinosaur to Mt Everest can seem like a 50 mile walk. I'd try sticking to a section of a park, and once your finished, rotate to the other nearest section. If Space Mountain Magically drops to a 10 minute wait (HA! Never!...) then sure head over there, but try finding the shortest route and don't rush your child. My first trip was when I was about 5 or 6 and, my dad carried me everywhere because I kept getting tired from walking to one end of the park to the other! Now we know to minimize the walking!

Snacks, bring some from home or the resort. Disney gets pricey real fast and the summer heat will burn you out. You will most likely want a treat but constantly getting expensive, fattening food at Disney is just too much. Things like trail mix, peanut butter crackers or granola bars are good substitutes.

For QS meals I recommend
MK- Kaseys Hots dogs and brownies, Yum!
AK- Restaurantosaurous- Classic park food, but its a really large indoor location and an amazing done. It's part of the 'Dig site' so it has a cozy cabin section, and a fossils section. Plus MOOSE in a CUP! Yum!
DHS- Sunshine market, lots of seating, large variety of food and close to ToT, Fantasmic and R'n'R. Really amusing to watch people ride the ToT.
Epcot- Japan has an okay quick service, Epcot isn't great for any good QS's.Some people like the Electric umbrella but it always smells like relish and that someone just belched. Good for location I guess.

HINT: Rides queues cut in half during parades and shows! :D

Take things easy! So what if you miss Illuminations? Life will go on, and there will always be another tomorrow. Enjoy the beauty and warn your daughter to take things slow to. It's vacation not rush hour. :)

Have an amazing experience! Its a trip filled with many wonderful memories that you will cherish forever. Disney will never let you down. :)

See ya Real Soon!

Ditto to this. At 5 and 6 my kid spent the majority of her time on my shoulders. At 7, she was a bit too large to do this often safely (we were now severely top heavy! Not good in crowds!). That didn't stop her from wanting to do shoulder time "For old times sake" (her words, not mine...inventive little munchkin!)...

I'm hoping that at a very tall 8, she's not so averse to walking. My point is, your advice about sticking to an area is good advice. Also, a kid as young as 6 is probably going to get distracted with smaller things, not just the big experiences and rides. For example, while my kid enjoys Dinosaur, she'd much rather spend an hour digging around in the boneyard!

Of course, every child is different.

thank you for the suggestions! your dining ones were different than mot which I like because makes me think there is more then one option :)

I did notice that all touring plans have one running back and forth all over the place...we are so not doing that. If she wants to ride something that has a long line that will be her choice but I am not dragging her all the way across the park 20 times to try and avoid it. We will go at a decent pace and take our time to enjoy everything!

As far as the camera goes...I did consider your advice, but being a photographer, I am attached to it and will not be able to do without. We won't be riding ToT so no worries there :) I will just keep it around my neck like usual and in a few plastic bags inside my book bag on wet rides like Splash.

Thanks again for your help :)

You may be suprised by your kid. Mine did ToT and Everest one month shy of age 6 without batting an eye, and ToT was her favorite ride by far until she was tall enough for RNR, which is now her new favorite.

That being said, it's not hard to secure bags, if you take a backpack, underneath your legs on the rides. I carry one of these (recent upgrade from my older Swiss Gear pack of a similar style):

$(KGrHqV,!qUFGiHseGL1BRqsLw,W1!~~60_57.JPG

It works fine. I attached a non locking carabiner to the loop on the top, which I then clip to a beltloop on my shorts / pants, and then tuck the bag between my legs. Works great on ToT and RnR...

Splash can be wet, but I also do the ziplock thing for electronics when they are in the bag (more about sudden rain than rides, and this new bag is highly water resistant). As far as Kali River (the wettest ride outside of water parks at Disney), I wrap it up in a Poncho, as well as using the plastic bags, and stow it under my seat.

A poncho in late August (that's when I always go) is a must. Jackets are nice, but the rains really require more. Unless you want to pay park prices (which is fine, about ~10 - 14, but they are good quality and last many years), pick some up before the trip and ALWAYS carry them in your pack. The rain comes quickly, and swiftly, and comes down hard.

She is very petite and barely 40". Some rides, even if she wants to go on, she won't be able to do. Also, she has already basically told me its not happening with most. I am going to make her go on BTM though, because that is one that I have absolutely always wanted to ride, and I AM GOING TO! Does that make me a bad mother? lol :)

Bad Mom?

Not at all! But, I'd try her out on Barnstormer first to see how she feels about it. If you really want to go, there's always Ride Swap. I'm a single parent taking a kid as well when I travel (most of the time, in 2011 her Mom and Uncle joined us), and I've never used it...but it is an option for rides you really want to do that she is too short for.

They also have "Kids Clubs" that are a lot of fun that you can check her into if you need a few hours of "mommy alone time"...though, being a first trip, I suspect you won't! You'll be soaking in every minute!

Yeah, 40" is gonna keep her off a lot of things (Space Mountain @ 44", Mission Space @ 44", RnR @ 48", Everest @ 44", Primeval Whirl @ 48").

My kid is naturally tall. Her mom is 5'8" and I'm 6'2"...so she grows like a sprout. At 5 she was 44 1/2", and could do pretty much everything except RnR, a few of the slides at Blizzard and Typhoon, and a few things at Disneyquest. On our last trip she was 50", and according to her mom she's at 53" now, at age 8!

Yeesh, they grow up to quickly!

Rent a stroller or bring one with you. She will tire out quickly in the heat walking. Don't forget some pool time. My daughter loved the games they played in the afternoon. My daughter also enjoys the penny presses. They are located in the gift shops in each ride, at the different resorts. It's a cheap souvenir and a great way to walk her quickly through the gift shops getting off the rides. Of course everything she sees she wants to buy. I have gone on a couple I trips with just my daughter and loved this special time with her. Nothing better than your daughter sitting on your lap watching wishes. Have a wonderful time!

You are going to have such a magical time! Take is slow and enjoy what you do get done. There is no way you'll be able to do everything (I've been going my whole life and still haven't done everything!) so don't try. Make a list of the things you think you'll enjoy and enjoy the experience.

I noticed that you have the Pixar parade at HS in your plans. Sorry to say, but this parade was done away with back in March and as of now, there is no parade at HS.

If you plan to bring peanut butter with you, make sure you put it in your checked bag because, yes, it is considered a liquid by TSA.

If you want to get groceries for your trip and not just a few essentials that you can find in the shop or food court at the resort (bread, milk, etc), consider ordering through Garden Grocer. They'll deliver right to the resort!

We always carry snacks in our backpack so we don't have to purchase them inside the parks. Of course we get a few snacks like ice cream or rice krispies, but we don't usually purchase too much. Everything at Disney is more expensive, so be prepared for the sticker shock. We paid $13 for a can of spray sunscreen while we were there recently because I had packed the sunscreen in our checked bags - which you have to do of course because it's more than 3oz. Anyway, just saying that to say, be prepared and bring as much from home as possible to cut down on costs.

I was about to reply with a similar response. My father has one of these and loves it! He adores the "snugness" of the bag. Personally he uses it for his camera, and it protects it very well! If we are simply walking around and enjoying the scenery, he can pull it out and keep it that way. When its ride time,he place it back in his bag gently and we are good to go! Plus it is so snug, he sometimes doesn't take it of for coasters!
Purses however, I would still try to keep those light, I carried a Harry potter book around the park one day by accident last year. Lets say it ruined most of the day. Which is another good tip, don't bring a book to the park....

thank you for the this! I actually wouldn't have cared that much if we missed it but I figured she would enjoy it. This helps the plans a bit though, with having some un scheduled time in there.

I would not try to plan anything for the times that you do not have anything scheduled. For a first trip, this looks pretty good. You didn't say where you were staying, but since you are not doing the dining plan (I agree!), you may want to take your lunch break at your resort food court, where your options would probably be greater.

You will also probably have to do the later Fantasmic since your ADR for Chef Mickey is at 6:25 p.m. and you may find that you are pressed for time to get back to Studios.

I like your choice of breakfast at Epcot--the castle has a rather small dining room and parties are rushed through their meal and experience. The very best place to eat with Cinderella is 1900 Park Fair at Grand Floridian. I hope you have loads of fun and enjoy every minute with your daughter for a wonderful magical time.

We are staying at the Art of Animation Little Mermaid Rooms. Because of money restrictions it had to be value and I let my daughter choose. since it is new I thought it was a good choice for our trip :)

Excellent choice. We stayed at Pop, and the fixtures / age certainly showed. I suspect you will fully enjoy the experience there!
