Hello!! Just last week I fell and broke both my Tibia and my Fibula in my left leg!!:( We have a family trip planned March 21st-28th. It will be eight of us going down to celebrate my son turning 3!!!:sohappy: My question is, I will still be unable to walk around on my own all day..do you guys think I should postpone it? I really really really dont want to, but I am torn as to whether I will have more fun later. But I really want to go down for my sons bday, we did last year and it was amazing..and further more..I am going crazy just waiting till March..I don't want to have to wait much longer!! Any opinions and experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

People have gone who have been in much worse condition than you. At least your disability is temporary. I say, go and have fun, and count your blessings while you are there.

Oh yeah...sorry to hear about your leg. OUCH :(

I'm sorry about your injury - that blows my sprained ankle out of the water! The only experience I've had with broken bones at Disney was when my brother broke both of his arms a week before we left years ago, but since he could still walk that doesn't really help you, does it?

Since it sounds like your trip's already set, I say pack your crutches and rent a wheelchair. Be ready and willing to take a break if you need it, because I'm pretty sure that you will! :)

I've rented scooters the last few trips we've gone down... I was in OK shape 3 trips ago, but my mom came with us and she couldn't have walked the parks and kept up. Her feet cause her pain and she would have been miserable. So we rented a scooter for her...

The last two trips, I rented a scooter for myself due to a degenerative knee problem coupled with a partially torn ACL.

I've had great luck with http://www.scootarama.com/ and their prices are reasonable.

Our next trip is scheduled for November, and I'm currently rehabbing my 2nd knee surgery in 4 months so I hope that I'll be moving around on my own and scooter free for our next trip.

Good Luck!

Question: Are we talking a)ankle, b)2/3 the way down in the shaft or c)higher up toward the knee? Big differences in how those heal and how much you could reasonably expect to do.
If it's the ankle (they might have called it a bimalleolar or trimalleolar fracture) I'd say go for it. You'll have five or so weeks of healing under your belt already and should do alright if you use the wheelchair or scooter to get around. Beware, though; even though it should be feeling a lot better then, you will swell up a lot by the end of the day and ache. I'd be sure to bring some pain meds just in case.

Scooters are abundant in WDW. I would rent one and go and enjoy your sons birthday! Don't let a couple of broken bones get in the way of your fun! :)

We figured we walked between 8-l/2 and l2 miles each day in the parks on our visit in January...IF you go, you definitely should have a wheelchair or scooter to get around. (My husband broke two bones in his ankle two weeks ago and dr. said it would be 6 to 8 weeks and then a walking cast...He has been off his feet 98% of the time now to give healing the best chance.) If your dr. says its okay, I'd go but I'd take it really easy...

You could postpone it. You might have a bit more fun. But, I really would not see a problem with it. You can rent a wheelchair whilst in Disney, and you can still ride some rides. I'm sure you'll still have an enjoyable time with your son no matter what.

I agree with other posters on scooter or wheelchair. Take advantage of being near your son's height and get a lot more pictures of him! Hope you feel better.

I would try to get around on your own if you want. If it proves to be a problem there are plenty of wheel chairs and scooters at your disposal.

Definitely go . . . it is worth it.

My SIL broke her leg about a month before our trip Dec08. The hotels on property will let you have a wheelchair for no charge for the whole duration of your stay. They are on a first come first serve basis. We got one when we checked in and kept it the whole trip. It had Disney's Wilderness Lodge on the back of it as well making it very easy to find in the sea of chairs in the parks. You can go to guest relations when you enter each park and they will explain how to handle the wheelchair in their park. At the time we went they gave us a red plastic card to carry with us to show to the cast members for ease of explanation.

SIL would get a little tired of sitting and get up and use her crutches for a while, but that gets very tiring in WDW. Get the wheelchair, you will feel much better.

Well...

I had a bad Motorcycle accident in 2001 and broke the same two bones in my left leg. I've been to WDW three time since and just carried a cane if I needed one. To this day the fib is still fractured, but I refuse to let it slow me down from doing anything including WDW, working hard, and riding my harleys!

Go...by all means go...rent the scooter and go. Life is short, and our kids grow up way too fast. When you're feeling better, and you're out of that cast, go again!

Just take that break when you need one.

FYI...the Trout Pass Bar at the WL is a great place for a break.:D

Sorry about the broken leg. :( ouch! I shattered my foot 6 weeks before a trip to Disney. I went and enjoyed myself anyways. I was in a cast for 9 months because I had to have pins and plates put in my foot. Also before I broke foot, I had come off of a hairline fracture 2 months prior from a fence post on the same foot.
We just rented a scooter and enjoyed the park. Besides I had a lot of people ask me how it happened and if I was doing okay. They laughed when I told them I hurt it taking the cat to the vet. It made for a good laugh. Perks was we got to take our time going to rides. No one really hurried us on or off. I would definitely go and enjoy Disney. I did have to take my time because of the surgery. I just took my pain medicine when needed and took my time. If I didn't cover a park in one day, we did not worry too much about it. Go and Enjoy!!!!!

OUCH! I did the same thing several years ago, I went ahead and went. I was taking all three of our kids on my own for a national tumbling tournamant at Wide World of Sports. We rented a wheel chair and my son, who was in 6th grade at the time, pushed me everywhere. The kids enjoyed it becasue we got to the front of the line much faster :D! It was not easy going it alone with the kids (4th grade, 6th grade and 8th grade, hubbie at home working) but I did it and we had fun. It was in June so it was really HOT, I have to say I was slightly miserable at times. I could not weight bare at all, as I assume you can't either so a wheelchair was a must. I did rent an evc one day but the crowds were unbearable, people walking all around me assuming I could stop on a dime (those things don't) so I found the simple push chair best. Go, have fun and good luck!

I did the tib/fib fracture about 14 years ago as well, complicated by a cracked ankle bone in the opposite leg. (From slipping in dog doo, if you can believe it:rolleyes:). Frankly, I don't think I would have attempted a WDW visit until I was at least out of the cast, which took nearly 6 months. I was in a wheelchair for the first few weeks, then crutches for the remainder. Moving on the crutches for long periods is exhausting, and the friction from a lot of walking may give you blisters on your hands and in your arm pits.

However, if you have a fairly big guy in the group that doesn't mind pushing you around the majority of the park, then I'd go. I'd also stick to a conventional wheelchair with a leg lift so that you can keep the leg elevated to avoid swelling inside the cast, which can be uncomfortable.
