Disney WiFi and iPhones -- Blocked?

Speaking of iPhones... I have a iPhone 4 ... And my battery seems to drain twice as fast as it usually does when I'm in Disney. No, I don't use it for pics. Yes it's a older phone now but I've downloaded all the updates etc. It doesn't say it's roaming... Acting perfectly fine per usual except the battery life is worse for some reason...I was at 87% by 9AM one morning and I hadn't touched the phone. I'm sure it's got to be searching for something because it doesn't drain like that when I'm in VA. I have the whole nation wide, unlimited plan so I don't get it.

Thats exactly what its doing. There are spots where its searching for service. Plus every time you go on a dark ride, etc.

We had problems as well at riverside we were there dec.14 thru dec.20 and we could not stay connected on our laptops. It was very upsetting to be disconectted everytime you tried to search something.

Wish the resort and the parks was 3G or 4G instead instead of Wifi or LTE. I found that the parks was faster than the resort during the days and the resort faster during night time hours.

What do you mean 3G/4G instead of LTE? LTE is 4G. It's true 4G. If you have an iPhone 4S on AT&T that shows "4G" that was their method of providing faster bandwidth using the 3G towers, but not true full blown 4G. So they now just call it LTE instead of 4G to differentiate between the two. And in theory most carriers still have 4G and 3G antennas on the same tower, so you should be able to fail gracefully to 3G if 4G isn't available. Many are getting rid of their old EDGE networks and forcing people to upgrade to 3G, but thats a different story.

Searching for a signal. Most of the buildings are build of stuff thick and tough enough to mess with the signals. So when you are inside Peter Pan, it often is sitting there searching for a network. Then finding it again when you exit, but then searching again when you get on IASW, then finding it again, etc. Can't recall if these specific rides have issues or not, but the concept applies.

Another culprit for battery rain is location services. If you are using the official Disney apps that like to use that a lot, or the official Apple Find a Friend app, it kills the battery life.

I am having much better luck with the in park wi-fi than I am with the in room service at both of my resorts on this trip on my iPhone. In the room I have to reset wi-fi about every 3 minutes, but at the parks I can do everything, including download podcasts.

Yes I completely agree that has to be it. Just stinks I hardly touch my phone and it is heavily drained already.

You are right Steve. Thanks for the info - I purposely have location services turned off to save the battery. I sometimes don't get a 3G signal in the park either so I'm sure it's searching for that too. Tried to connect to the free wifi and while its nice of disney I couldn't get on it due to so many ppl. Thanks to everyone for their input

We were there Dec. 13-20 and had horrible Wi-Fi issues at Jambo House. We were good the night we checked in but it was all down hill from there. My son didn't seem to have any problems with his iPhone 4s it was just trying to connect with our laptops where we had issues. I was really OK with it not working but my plugged in son wasn't amused ;)

I was able to log in just fine at CS resort but it was as painfully slow as sitting through Stitch.

Is the wired (lan) internet still available in resort rooms?
Is that the one that had the cable hanging in a bag on a hanger? If so, it was not in rooms I was in...and it ed me off. The Disney internet left a lot to be desired.

If they'd have given me a choice between the crappy high-tech thing that didn't work well and the corded thing, I'd have taken the cord.
