Disney Twenty-three - is it worth it $40/year?

What is D23 anyway? Not the press event, I mean what does the subscription give you? I've been considering it.

You get a subscription of four magazines a year. The magazines are really beautiful and well done and each magazine comes with a free gift. A subscription to e-news letters, exclusive events (most are in California, but there are a few in WDW), special gifts sometimes, discounts... They used to have contests for us but we haven't had one in a really long time. This is the gold membership. The silver one comes without the magazines.

I only got the first year. You get a magazine a few times a year. Much of it was not-very-veiled ads. Some is info, but it isn't all that well written. The pages are good quality, though. It came packed in cardboard and a plastic sleeve to keep it in pristine condition.

They'd send trinkets like an extra postcard or something.

You got the opportunity to give them more money by buying special pins that can also be purchased on ebay, if you really want them

You also got the opportunity to give them more money by attending events in California, if you want to go to California, which I didn't.

There was additional stuff for being a charter member.

That's all I remember. I didn't care much about the trinkets and felt that I'd paid $20 each for a few issues of a magazine that I didn't much like, so I didn't re-up.

It might be better now. I won't pay to find out.

Let's pray the Expo isn't as bad as 2011's. Did you go? I went and after an hour, I left. Total madhouse.
No, this will be my first. I'm hopeful they've learned from some of the mistakes they made.

I'm incorporating it into a two-week stay at DL/DCA, so if it's a flop all is not lost, we'll still have loads of time to get really familiar with the parks.

Holy moly, that's a lot of Disneyland and California Adventure. Hopefully some annual passholder events will be going on during your time there. Planning on doing anything else in California, or just the Expo and the DLR?

As of now just that, but it's a long way out. Morgan and I can easily self-entertain in the parks for the whole time, but since we'll be meeting up with a few WDWMagic friends who think we're crazy to spend two weeks doing that, we might change things up. He has a Deluxe DLR AP and I have a Premier that we got mainly for this trip, so I'm not averse to getting our money's worth. ;)

I was a charter gold member and renewed a couple years. At first I thought it was great, the magazine has in- depth articles. I'm not really interested in the latest snowglobe but more into the history of the parks, etc. They have some nice extras that come with the magazines. The magazines are top quality, glossy pages, come in a box. $75 a year is a lot of money for 4 magazines, though. As was stated above, I can get them at B&N. Some of the "exclusive D23" events looked great, but I could never seem to fit them into my schedule living in the midwest. You can surf our great wdwmagic and get much of the same info, anyway!

You'll definitely be getting your money's worth with two weeks, LOL. Hope you guys end up having a great time.:)

I was a charter who kept membership going through our 2011 WDW trip, then let it go. Living in Massachusetts attending any D23 events wasn't a real option. The magazines are of high quality, but it seemed like every other issue turned into extended advertisements for upcoming movies or other publicity, while my primary interest was the parks. I was surprised how little time I spent with the magazines when they arrived, just carefully put them away with their enclosed trinket. Between the quarterly pace and the almost-instant ability to get Internet-based real Disney news, the magazines seemed almost like museum pieces by the time they arrived. Still miss the old "Disney" magazine actually. I ended up buying a D23 members only pin while I was at WDW in 2011, and that was it.

They haven't come to Canada yet though! :(

Cry me a river, I've got a Gold Membership and am based in Australia - so not only am I just paying for the magazine but also events/discounts I can't use PLUS International Shipping.

And to top that off, Disney Australia have given up on the Disney Rewards program.

If anyone needs me Ill be over here burning more money as a sacrifice to the Disney Gods...

PS Aladdin is out on BR this week though... Win some, lose some.

I feel ya! When I first signed up they were charging International shipping to Canada as well, it more than doubled the total IIRC. It's still expensive, but the did drop it a lot to Canada.

So, Op, are you signing up?
Well, the jury is still out on the Silver membership, though I've determined that the magazine is not really worth $40 to me. If I really want it sometime later, I can always upgrade my membership (if I join at all).

However, I am a pretty big Disney Geek, so I may not be able to resist much longer.

Okay, it's been a few weeks. Time for a follow-up question:

Are the in-park "perks" worth the Silver ($35) membership?
