Dow Jones Business News
Six Flags Shares Climb on Rumor of Interest From Disney
Wednesday August 6, 1:56 pm ET
By Dwight Oestricher

NEW YORK -- Shares of Six Flags Inc. (NYSE:PKS - News) rose Wednesday on a rumor that Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS - News) was interested in buying the company, traders said.

A spokesman for Disney said the company doesn't comment on rumors. However, a source close to the company said there is no truth to the rumor.

Six Flags didn't immediately return calls for comment.

It would seem that a combination of theme park operations wouldn't be a match. Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California are destination resorts, while Six Flags has smaller, regional theme parks across the country...

The article goes on to talk about Six Flags expected earning shortfall.

Very interesting

Disney would NEVER buy Six Flags... No way... Like the article mentioned, Disney operates destination resorts, not day-trip parks like Six Flags...

That's a rumor (and a false one at that! ) if I ever saw one! :D

I saw it on several news wires when checking my financials, so it is out there.

I don't think Disney would have any interest (although doesn't Six Flags have Looney Toons?) in these parks.

Personally, I think someone in Six Flags leaked this, but who knows.

No way... There's no way Disney would buy up the small little thrill parks that Six Flags puts out... I don't know if this is the most stupid thing I've heard, or the wierdest thing I've heard?!? :veryconfu

Well do I need to link in all the other discussions about some of the other actions by upper management that don't make any sense?

Would that really be that bad of an idea, most of the parks are in major citys, the rides dont have to be copys of disney parks.Buy them cheap clean them up and make $$ from those people who would never go to WDW or disneyland.Think about it

It is certainly interesting to note that the horrible Six Flags stocks did rise due to these rumors. They may have just wanted to create an artificial surge in their stock prices to get out of a slump--not necessarily a bad business move, but it won't solve any of the company's problems--that stems from the fact that Six Flags couldn't run a park correctly if their lives depended on it (they can't even keep their bathrooms clean, let alone offer good food, respectable theming, or Vekoma coasters that don't cause bodily injury after the first season). Disney tries to create artificial increases in its stocks all the time, with those things we call press releases. You announce new attractions when you stocks are at a low hoping for a jump start effect--we'll see if all these new wdw projects work to that effect--certainly a better approach than spreading a false rumor.

It sounds just wat DogsRule was talking about...Six Flags is just trying to get people to invest in their stock....

...That being said...I know that it sounds weird but I think its not a bad idea for Disney to do this...think about it...put all the Disney characters into these parks...slowly improve the theming and the food and what not....and people would surely come more often especially if the parks have the Disney name...there are more costs but there could also be more $$$ coming in....if anything I see Disney buying certain parks not the whole company....

The rumor is interesting, true or not. And I agree with what someone said in another post...Disney has done dumber things. Just my opinion.

I don't think they would do that because I think it could ultimately hurt DisneyWorld and Disneyland. Maybe not by a whole lot, but you are going to have alot of uneducated people that feel that since they have a "Disney Park" in their hometown why would they spend the time and money to travel to another "Disney Park?" Not knowing of course or not wanting to realize that they are two totally different things. I think there will be plenty of people like that that will cause Disney to not think about doing it. I for one would love it because I would have a Disney quality park close to me to get a fix in until my next REAL Disney Park experience, if anything having one so close would make me want to go to Disney World even more so because I'd have that Disney magic around me too much.

If Disney bought Six Flags they wouldn't have to put the disney name on them, but can bring the good things about Disney to the parks. They'd be cleaner and have better customer service and get better rides. It would give Imagineers a lot more work to do. I don't think they should put the characters in the parks though as that would hurt WDW and DL. They could make new characters or just not have characters.

I always wanted Disney to buy the local amusement park, so I could have Disney close.

Imagine--WDI could build places like Paradise Pier all over the place, and as opposed to at Cali Adventure, park guests in the former Six Flags parks would praise Disney for it. Granted, it will never happen, it would be pretty neat: you wouldn't necessarily find the Tower of Terror or other E-Tickets in the former Six Flags parks, but you would find classic Six Flags attractions upgraded to more Disney style theming...and it would allow all of us who don't live in Florida or Cali but dream of being Disney CMs the chance to do so w/o moving to FL or CA

See you are thinking about it ,This way Disney could have a park in Chicago, Atlanta,St Louis and so on.I know disney bought arlington racetrack several years ago for the land, not sure if they still own it or not today. Its an easy and cheap way for disney to get in those cities without the problems they had several years ago in the east coast

Disney aren't stupid, i'm sure they realise that if the bought them all and then made them all Disney resorts, a) it'd cost them a fortune, b) they lose so much money because visitors would drop to all their other resorts.

If they but them and just refurbish them and make profit, who can complain!?

Maybe they just buy 49% or summat!?

I think it would be an intersting move. Six Flags is very much about rollercoasters and IOA is about rollercoasters. There have been rumers about Disney building a park to compete with Universal and if they bought Six Flags and then improved them with Disney touches, just not Disney rides, they would end up with a good competitor.
