Disney Sweatshop Suicide

I agree - it should read sweatshop in China that manufactures toys for Mattel. And multiple company names and products could be substituted.

Agree, very misleading thread title. The debate on Chinese business practices is most likely one that does not need to occur on a Disney forum IMO.

Misleading title (of course)

Disney doesn't own or run the sweatshop.

I agree the title is a little misleading but Disney still does business with them so its negligence on their part. ((thats the argumet against them at least, im just playing devils advocate))

...? This is the Disney Co News section...since its news, and invoving the disney company i assumed it was a proper place to discuss their business practices. If you dont want to join in the discussion thats fine.

And even its unfair to Disney, since they do business with these people they are now going to be assocated with them.

As for the thread title see my last point.. (and I grabed the title from the news site I originally read it on)

I would hope that others realize that the OP was using the same title as the Guardian, and that he did not compose it. It was misleading on the The Guardian's part - I guess they knew that using "Disney" might get more attention than "Mattel."

If Disney farms out all their manufacturing, but maximizes its own profits by choosing the manufacturer who offers the lowest costs, does that absolve them of all moral blame?

If choosing to select the most cost effective option is immoral, then most of the human race is immoral.

If you really want to be honest, Disney can't be held to blame. The story says the workers were routinely ordered to lie to client investigators and hide evidence of chemicals etc... At a certain point "due diligence" has been met. If Chinese authorities refuse to crack down on abuses, Disney, Mattel and others can't reasonably be expected to conduct repeat undercover investigations at every plant worldwide that manufactures for them.

As far as the profit vs morals argument... If you really want to correct this kind of thing on a global scale, change the laws and charge import duties on any products not manufactured at home. Make it less profitable to outsource production to third-world countries or countries with less-than-stellar labour practices. Then you'd have better domestic employment and a stronger economy and the top 2% of income-earners in the country wouldn't be the only people benefiting from productivity and sales.

The "Global Economy" isn't improving life for the lower or middle classes, only for the very rich. It's dragging the vast majority of us to the lowest common denominator, all in the pursuit of profits. But the very rich finance the politicians, so guess who's going to actually take appropriate corrective action?
