Disney Stockholder?

I own Disney shares, but I have never voted. I have always supported the company in its decisions so there has never been a need for me to vote. By abstaining, all of my votes support the Disney company 100%. As a result, my votes have always been among the majority.

We have been Disney stock holders for many years and vote on the issues that are critical to the continued success of the company and that support the investment we have made in the company. However, we do not vote every issue because I simply do not have enough inforamation to understand the ramifications of certain issues. I have always believed that voting on something you are not fully informed about is much more dangerous than not voting at all. I know I could do additional research but sometimes I just don't care to learn about the potential implecations of off balance sheet financing for water district improvement projects to support the park expansion in Europe, etc...

I'm wondering if anyone that says "we vote" has an amount of shares that can actually influence anything. If you have, like the OP said, 40 shares, don't waste your time voting on anything. Anyone know how many shares of DIS stock there are available in total? Most of you it will blow your minds.

Unless you have 10000 or more shares, voting is going to accomplish nothing.

There are 2.01 billion outstanding shares of DIS stock.

I don't really see the relevance of this thread. Yes, I own Disney stock and yes I vote every year; however, as someone who frequents the Disney parks annually I would have just as much right to "whine" about goings on in the parks, though not necessarily the company, because I am a consumer of their product.

I own disney stock as well. Have done it for a while, although it's not much. Unfortunately I have not voted, even this year's meeting, but I believe I shall start to next year.

Hopefully when I make more finacially I'll invest in more stock.

I don't agree with this at all. Sure one vote won't do anything, but get enough people together to vote on the same thing and you can accomplish a lot. For instance look at that Save Disney Campaign, it got a lot of people together to vote Eisner out. It didn't accomplish that, but it definately made the Company look at itself and split up the job of CEO and Chairman. So even though I don't have many shares, I'm still going to vote.

I've owned Disney stock long enough to have seen 3 splits.

Haven't had a need to complain about, well, much of anything since Those-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named were removed from Disneyland.

It isn't a democracy. You misunderstand how voting as a shareholder works.

The big investment corporations vote all their votes together. So, since 69% of DIS stock is held by big corporations, an individual's vote is only part of that 31%.

The kick Eisner out vote you refer to is misunderstood. Yes, they got about 45% of individuals to vote to kick Eisner out. However, thats only 45% of the 31%. The big investment companies will always vote with the company line. So you are talking somewhere around 12-13% of the total amount of outstanding shares being for ousting Eisner.

Seems petty when you see it that way, doesn't it?

Eisner also chose to relinquish part of his title. He wasn't forced to. Same as he chose to step down in a month. Was it partly because of public disdain? Probably. But the votes did not force anything to happen. Roy Disney and the Comcast bid that Roy caused did.

Well, so my 200 shares are a much larger part of the 31% than they are of the entire 100%, which means my votes are even that much more valuable.

It doesn't really work that way. Even if you owned all of the 31% you would still not have much say as the other 69% Thawn talks about would nearly always vote with the company and would be the deciding factor. Even out of only 31% your 200 shares would still be out of 651,000,000 shares. In other words your vote is useless. Keep in mind that Roy Disney owns I believe about 17,000,000 shares. And yet even his vote couldn't get things to go his way.

As for the point of this thread, I also have Disney stock however I rarely vote for the same reason Woody explained earlier.

No. It doesn't matter how you vote your minority. Whatever the 69% votes is what will happen, and like I said, investment companies always side with the company they are invested in.

I realized I should have answered the thread. I do not vote, because even through I own a good amount of shares, they are still meaningless. I cannot divulge the number of shares I own, however I can say that its in the thousands.

:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy: Oh, how cool you are..you are the ultimate whiner then!

If you didn't want to divulge the number of shares you own--what did saying it's in the thousands do for you? Or for any of us for that matter?

Because once you own a certain percentage of shares, it is illegal to divulge the exact number of shares unless it is to the public. Thats why I said I can't, not I won't. SEC regulations are very strict about insider information. But that swipe you attempted to take was well worth it.

What did it do for any of us? Its the topic of the thread, of course.

Woody: One word: Diversify :D DIS is a great stock if you want very little change in it. And, once you own enough, even if it goes up only $1 you are still making thousands.

If we people on this thread are not the public, then what are we? Yes, I own Disney stock and have for several years and I vote every year. Because I can!! That is not to say that my one vote is so important, or makes a difference, but to me it is.
