Disney Sets Cars Spinoff Planes for a Theatrical Release

Walt Disney Pictures announced today that their upcoming animated film Planes will see a release theatrically on August 9, 2013.

Originally planned for a direct-to-home video release, Planes is an extension of the world featured in Cars and Cars 2.

Planes follows Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race... despite his fear of heights. With the help and support of a fleet of new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.

The August 9 release date puts Planes up against Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi tale Elysium and the New Line comedy We're the Millers.

My daughter has been waiting for this, she watches Cars 2 on her dvd player all the time & when they show that clip of planes she gets so excited.

The trailer didnt look all that bad but it worries me that it was planned as a home video release first. Not that it would be bad but is the quality going to be there for a theatrical release? I guess we will see.

Any word there will be any "Cars" cameos? Scenes flying over Ornament Valley etc.? That would really bring the Pixar/Disney animation relationship full circle. Since this is going to theatres now, maybe they threw in a few nuggets.

It is being done by DisneyToon Studios, not Pixar Animation Studios or Walt Disney Animation Studios.

This looks pretty awful to me.
The Cars movies were way below Pixar's usual standards of quality storytelling, so a direct-to-video spinoff where they just substitute one type of vehicle for another and market it to kids has the potential to be even worse.
