Disney sells off PI's spotlights and lighting inside of Motions

I think it's a step in the right direction to get PI out of it's mid-90's phase. I honestly don't see spotlights that style much anymore, they seem a little dated.

I disagree. The classic - mid-90s stuff is what made PI a GREAT night time venture. I am sick and tired of Disney thinking they need to constantly change. SOMEthings, yes. But they have ruined PI. They change clubs around that were hits (Jazz Club for example), take away the stage, close down other clubs that have the only live bands, and then start to wonder why people aren't coming there anymore.
I go now just for the Adventurers Club and one round of the Comedy Club, then it's back to the resort bar.
Universal's Citywalk has passed the mouse here...

I have an update that might shed some light on this matter. Last night, a company rented out the Studios for a huge convention. There was use of many of these "skytracker" lights along Sunset Boulevard. Perhaps the P.I. lights were moved to Studios for this event, and will be returning soon?

Actually there are other "mobil" units that can be place around property.

And maybe the skytrakers are been updated with new 10,000 watt systems. (just like the ones in RoE) that can actually change colors and do a little more.

Aw man, I LOVE those spotlights. On certain nights you could see them from all over WDW, and usually from quite a distance away from off property, too. I know they're just lights, but there were so many that it really helped make the whole atmosphere of the entire area feel more alive, not just PI/Downtown Disney.

It really is an obvious nail in the coffin for PI.

RIP obnoxious spotlights :(

Maybe there is hope.. those lights were very prominently visible from Epcot.. and perhaps they're woking on a new attraction that doesn't need spotlights behind it.

The mid-90's stuff made it a great night time venture, during the mid-90's. It isn't exactly appealing 15 years later. Too soon to be nostalgic but too late to be cutting edge. With something like a night club, you need to keep it current because it needs to appeal to a certain demographic. Even Motions, which is meant to be their big Top 40 dance club is outdated, I go in and hear music from 3-4 years ago being played as "current hits".

Are you confusing the Studios' spotlights with PI's?

Still, 3 years, for music, really isn't old at all.

I always thought an evening at Pleasure Island was like being at a really bad wedding reception. I think my last visit there was in the spring of 1995, and even then it seemed several years behind the times. After that last visit in '95 I never returned, and on my last few visits to Downtown Disney I peered into Pleasure Island and got the same tacky wedding reception vibe I got from '95.

Even Downtown Disney was showing its age and seemed tired and dated and stuck in the 1990's on my last visit there five years ago. I skipped Downtown Disney entirely the next time I went to WDW, and it's fallen off my list of things I want to see.

But perhaps if I was from a small town somewhere I might think of Pleasure Island as being this really exciting and hip experience? If they are now dismantling infrastructure and closing clubs, that can't be a good sign.

Ill put my money on a future re-incarnation of Pleasure Island with the concept floated aroud the Web of "Night Kingdom". A new, adult (as in not child) oriented night spot with still few clubs, in addition to a Dave & Buster's style eatery ( I know that a lot like Disney Quest), glow in the dark and regualr bowling, rock climbing walls, Whirly Ball, Laser Tag, Paint Ball, Indoor Mini golf, letc. And throw in the inflatable sumo wrestling suits too!! The concept of a more entertaining spot with a little more diverse attraction than just night clubs and drinking seems a little more attractive of a night spot. An attraction like this has "convention / corporate team building" written all over it during the day, if you have ever done the coporate team building at a laser tag thing. Just my ideas....but im sure there are nay-sayers
Thats all I got to say about that.

exactly. There is a reason the Vegas clubs for the most part don't last more than a year or two. You need to stay hip and modern to keep the crowds or they will go elsewhere. The current clubbing crowd probably sees little appeal in going to clubs that have remained largely unchanged since their parents took them to see when they were 14...there are much better clubs to be found in Orlando for those that are interested in it, but really I just don't see the point. If you want clubs, take a 5-day trip to Vegas...or drive down to Miami.

That's the point and that's where I hate the change - and I think there's more of us out there than Disney knows.
What demographics is Disney looking for. Is it the late teens to late 20s? If that's the case, then I won't be back. I don't care to see a bunch of constant drunks stumbling around trying to pick up a piece of a!!.
I'm late 40s, and I loved the Jazz Club and watching the West End stage as I stood in line waiting to go into the Comedy Club.
You want change - then change the bands, not the clubs.
And if you need to change, why is the Comedy Club and Adventures Club still going strong?

It depends on the style of club how much change is neccesary. At a themed club like Adventurers Club or Comedy Club it's a little different. Those clubs work really well because they aren't trying to be current or up to date. Clubs like Motions have to change to keep up with the times and Adventurers Club doesn't so much because it has a standard theme that doesn't change.
But when I say they need change I don't so much mean the themeing of the clubs, more things like decor and music and atmosphere. To me things like the spotlights and some of the signs or facades are what makes it come off mid-90's to me.
