Disney security in retail stores

Plain clothes security. Back in the mid 90s on my sister's senior trip to WDW a group of boys thought it'd be fun to steal stuff. Security followed them from shop to shop until they stole about $500 worth of merchandise and then approached them. The boys were sent home on the next flight out and expelled.

I don't know if that's typical (waiting until the shoplifter reaches a certain amount) or not.
This isn't a reply to your post. Just wanted to say I just love your avatar :).

I used to work at a clothing retail store, at a location in a large city where a lot of shoplifting happened each day. We had a plain-clothes security person who's only job was to watch people and catch shoplifters. I was there for three months, and the security guard didn't catch one person. This is because although he saw multiple thefts taking place, the rules for approaching the shopper were very strict. He had to see the person take the item, and not lose sight of him or her for even a moment before they walked out the front door. That means if they went into the dressing room, the bathroom, or he lost track of them in one of the departments, he could not approach them. I would think Disney would have a similar problem. With how hectic the stores are it would be difficult to not lose sight of someone between when they take the item and when they walk out of the store.

my sister in law worked for pier one for a while and she was a manager for a bit and even if they see a theft they cant call the police. They dont want the publicity or the headache. it isnt worth it. Disney def gets them in the end going there isnt cheap so if they steal 300 dollars worth of souveniours they prolly really just walked away with 20 dollars worth of stuff yet spent 2000 on a vacation .

I have heard that in a retail situation you can't do anything until the customer actually leaves the store. If you see someone put something in their bag you can direct them to the registers but you can't stop them until they walk over the threshold. This is because until they cross over the threshold it technically isn't stolen it just hasn't been paid for yet and they still have the opportunity to do such.

Well when I worked for a big name clothing company, we had a "loss prevention" guy who confronted shoplifters who stuffed clothing into their bags. They didn't have to leave the store, although many did when they were confronted. I can't imagine that happening at Disney, but it's hard to believe Disney would let someone go, especially someone who is a repeat offender, or steals a lot of high priced merchandise.

That's just it....there isn't a LOT of high priced merchandise to steal. There is a lot of over priced merchandise but it's all inexpensive.
