According to TMZ it is, and I agree.

No, not our world, the Small one. According to the LA Times, the family of the woman who helped create "It's a Small World" is begging Disney not to screw up the iconic ride with "idiotic" changes.

The ride has been closed since January to upgrade its boats - which some think was needed in order to accommodate the ever increasing weight of the general population. But now other changes are being tossed around.

Miceage.com is reporting that Disney Imagineers are considering adding Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Peter Pan, Nemo and other Disney characters to locations throughout the ride while replacing the Papua, New Guinea, rain forest scene with an American tribute.

In an open letter to Disney execs, the family writes, "The Disney characters of themselves are positive company icons, but they do NOT fit in with the original theme of the ride. They will do nothing except to marginalize the rightful stars of the ride 'The Children of the World.'"

Disney officials say some additions will be made to Small World but that no decision has been made on specific creative changes to the ride despite the speculation.

There was a topic about that a few weeks ago....NO, most of WDWMAGIC does NOT want characters.

Subtly placed, like a HM,yes, but not full in your face like Stitch wearing a hula skirt.

Im just happy more and more people are getting vocal about these dumb changes. Imagine if those of us with good taste had this kind of support 10 years ago...maybe Mr.Toad and 20k under the sea and the original Journey into imagination would still be with us right now. Oh well better late than never.

So far over 10,000 people have voted on TMZ and 90% of them do NOT want characters added into the ride.

The Hong Kong version plans on adding atleast 40 Disney animated characters to the ride done as stylized Mary Blair children.

"and it's only at Hong Kong Disneyland"

What works for Hong Kong where many people can only associate Disney through it's animated characters, doesn't work in America where generations have come to know Disney for its unique rides and not just it's Animated Characters.

There's no reason why the original small world can't be left as is....original! (with the exception of new boats, flume, and new paint, costumes, etc)

Let each small world version be unique and different, it's nothing more than a marketing tie in so people can buy their peter pan plush doll after someone points him out during the ride, and small world becomes a disney character hide and seek ride, just like the let's find johnny depp game many 3 minute attention span youtube generation kids now do at pirates. :snore:

It is pretty amazing that this made it to TMZ. And yes the poll isn't an end all be all by any stretch, but it is still pretty lopsided. Maybe Disney will take notice (to the media coverage, not the simple poll).

Disney does pay attention to the public, no matter what some people think.

The problem is that we here at wdwmagic are not always indicative of the greater population of this country, much less a global Disney community.

I'm against, of course, but we'll see where this takes us. :brick:

I love it when she says, "Only at Hong Kong Disneyland!!" Good lets keep it that way, did you see those dolls? There was nothing subtle about them, heck Peter Pan wasn't even disguised he was in his green tunic. Not good, the chinese can have the ride whichever way they can identify with it but our ride needs to stay the way generations have identifiyed with it.

I like the little hidden Finding Nemo characters you could find during the Holiday Small World, but that's about as much as I want to see as well!

edit: never mind. The changes are totally different then what I thought it was going to be. Ignore this.

Don't know if this has been posted before, but here's a link to what the characters look like.

They fit in. Well, all except the Lilo and Stitch piece.
I don't have an opinion on adding the characters...
But I'm against the rainforest turining into a tribute to America.

The LA Times Travel Blog reports that WDI confirmed the addition of Alice as well as a few more characters in the ride. Alice and the White Rabbit will be located near the red and white chessboard that already exists.

They also insist that, unlike the Blair family letter suggested, Mickey and Minnie will not be in the ride.

They also say the new characters will be in the style of the Mary Blair original artwork.

It will not be a carbon copy of the Small World that is being added to Hong Kong Disneyland.

It's not like the Disney dolls are going to stick out like a sore thumb.
