Disney Resort Rooms through the years - Post Pics

I recently bought Contemporary room lamp from previous room design ( flying saucer one) It got me thinking, how have the resorts decor changed through the years. I did some looking on this forum and on the net and was unsuccessful at finding any such pictures. I was thinking be great to see how the rooms at the Contemporary and other resorts had changed over the years. Sadly I don't have any of my own pictures to share and to start off with. But be great if some members on here could post some pictures they have from old publications or maybe even personal pics of the room decor from different decades.

Btw if a post like this exist or if another member knows where I can find a site with these type of pictures can be seen that would be great too.

What a difference! The new contemporary rooms look so nice in comparison!

I don't have any personal pictures to submit, as my first trip was in 1989 and we stayed in the Pickett (now the Doubletree) off property, and then I didn't go again until 1998, and my pictures from that trip (staying at All Star) don't look too different than what the rooms look like now.

However, one of my favorite sites, Walt Dated World has a bunch of old resort photos:
http://waltdatedworld.bravepages.com/id23.htm

I love the second picture down on the right, with the old tv on a stick and those retro chairs at the contemporary!

There's also links for:
Contemporary Resort of the Past
Dixie Landings
Fort Wilderness of the Past
Golf Resort/Disney Inn/Shades of Green
Polynesian Village of the Past
Villas/Village Resort/Disney Institute

I'd love to see any pictures anyone has of the inside of the treehouse villas before their refurb! I've always had a fascination with them!

Me too! There was a special on the Travel Channel the other day (Undiscovered Disney - new for 2010) that did a feature on them but didn't really show any "before", only how they were reconstructed and appear now. I also had totally forgotten about the Disney Institute - I remember getting some sort of a brochure from there when I was little and being completely obsessed with it. Can't believe I forgot about that!

Sewin2Disney : thanks for the link ,I had been there before but not in a long time, amazing to see the interior decor from then. Ive stayed with my family at many resorts, but I dont think we ever really took pictures ( shame)

JustInTime : I do like it but I also dont mind the old since I am a sucker for that type of look ( why I bought the lamp!)

NYwdwfan : I stayed at the Disney Institute, though when we stayed there the institute was not something they pushed anymore.. not even sure if it was available, I had heard that it got sold out a lot to corporations and their employees. But I loved the rooms, the 2 story and the tall roofs... shame they tore those rooms down.

Anyone : I'm going to try and find more photo galleries from other resorts on site. I would still love to see users own photos or images they scanned from old publications :)

Big difference in the decor of the Polynesian , this is a case where the new interior is far better than the previous.

Question : is the Caribbean beach resort room shot I have from 09 how all rooms are now?

This was a room in one of the Contemporary wings in 1978. As you can see, my brother was very happy with his new Mickey plush. :)

kbmum : Thanks for the photo, that is amazing. Theme-ing really doesn't seem evident back then. I wonder if the items that were in the rooms were catalog type items that were widely available to anyone. The artwork however looks special, Mary Blair type stuff. Thanks for sharing

MagicMegan : thanks for the info, Ive not stayed there in a long time hehe.

I found this photo on flickr, (credits to owner) Does anyone know what resort this is from? I'm assuming it is due to the photo on the wall and the rest of the photos are indeed from WDW in 73.

[EDIT] Image above is possibly the room design of Contemporary from early 70s [EDIT]

If that photo is 1973, it could only have been one of the following hotels:

Disney's Contemporary Resort; Disney's Polynesian Resort; Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground; Disney's Village Resort (Treehouse & Vacation Villas); Royal Plaza; Grosvenor (Dutch Inn); TraveLodge; Courtyard by Marriott (Howard Johnson); Shades of Green (Disney Inn, 1986-93, Golf Resort, 1973-86)

The second photo is from the Contemporary. The map was on the wall in our room, too. When we went back to the hotel two years later in 1980, they had been removed from the rooms, probably because the maps showed the three monorail hotels that were never built.

ErickainPA : Quiet a list of hotels, since I dont have any images from that time I cant be sure if other hotels besides Contemporary had that map in their rooms. Maybe if I can make this topic grow with more interest their will be no doubts how the rooms looked at that time.

kbmum : I should start looking out for some of those maps on ebay.. though I imagine I wouldn't be the only one. I imagine that they probably got sold to castmembers in the castmember lot back when they changed them out.

Anyone : here is another shot from the late 70s of Contemporary.

On another offtopic note, I imagine since mousesurplus and alike came along the castmembers dont get the deals anymore right?

Found one on ebay... not going to happen with this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/WDW-Walt-Disney...755?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a55c89c5b

great looking map, but yeah, good luck to him finding someone with an extra million just laying around that would use it for this map. I know I could do a whole heck of a lot with 1 million.

While looking for some 80s references to Disney rooms on flickr I came across this jewel. This guy is awesome, he took pictures of a vacation trip to Disney world in 84 and its great to see many old things long gone and some still there. BONUS, if you browse around the rest of his pictures hes got celebrity pictures from Emmy awards, Oscars , all taken from the 80s and early 90s.

On a side note, I usually only want original stuff but since I dont see myself spending 15k - 1 million dollars for an original map there is a site called http://wdwmap.com/

kbmum : looks like Mickey left your brother and stayed around a bit longer

It looks like he did! :) I think my brother still has the plush. I am surprised that this person's photo is dated 1984. I loved the map during my 1978 trip and spent a lot of time standing on the sofa/twin sleeper so I could look at all of its details. I very distinctly remember being disappointed when we went back in 1980 and the map wasn't in our room. Maybe my memories are off by a few years.

The first rooms of the Contemporary bring back memories. I think that giant map was there at at least until the early 80s. I was only about 2 or 3 at the time and have a very definite memory of that map on the wall. It would have been circa 1981 judging by an old video my parents took of my sister and I. I also remember having a lagoon view and seeing the electrical water parade on that trip from the room.

I also have a Marie plush from back then, same trip. I just didn't remember the Small world/Mary Blair art in the rooms. Just the Grand Concourse. Those I kind of want more than the giant map.

TinkerBelle8878 : Yes the Mary Blair work is very nice too, probably exists in peoples homes throughout the United States (especially Florida)

Anyone : Well I kind of cant update much more, Id have hoped people would post their own pictures since flickr and webshots can only show so much. I very much want to see Polynesian as it was in the 70s and 80s. And I want to see Contemporary in the late 80s to 90s. Of course would gladly welcome other resort room pictures too but those are on my top list.
