News Disney removing plastic straws and more by mid-2019

I had to ask for a paper straw at AKL. They weren't giving those out either probably because they are more expensive. Here's a tip for using paper straws: Take a drink, remove straw from liquid until next drink. Repeat. This will preserve your paper straw.

But does this really matter? We will all be dead in 12 years.

Here is a great article from NPR on why hard bans on plastic straws are harmful to some people with disabilities. In reference to your plastic/paper question here's a good quote from the article: "...paper straws and similar biodegradable options often fall apart too quickly or are easy for people with limited jaw control to bite through."
A quick summary: people with disabilities affecting their any of their motor skills, or those who are paralyzed, need plastic straws to be able to drink without assistance. All other straw alternatives introduce extra-steps/difficulties in order for them to be able to drink fluids.
Animal Kingdom has not had plastic straws from day one. Most zoos don’t either. Plenty of other places have started to get rid of plastic straws as well. I’m sure people who have difficulty with paper straws just plan ahead and either bring their own thermos/cup with built in straws or bring a few plastic straws. I really don’t think it’s being insensitive to ask a very limited number of people with this extreme of a condition to either bring their own cup or straws. I doubt Disney will have plastic straws on hand for them either. They never did at AK and I’ve not heard of lawsuits or major complaints over it.

I like the idea of reusable straws but hate that they are so hard to clean, especially on vacation. Don't forget to pack your pipe cleaner to clean out the straw.🤢
Yuk! You are right. The kit we got has a case, 6 bendable straws in different colors and a couple of spooly brushes.
We'll be trying them for the first time ;)

We live near kings dominion in Virginia and have season passes. You can buy a $30 refillable cup that is good for all season. They have soda stations throughout the park. I would love if they did something like this at Disney. Or at least put water bottle filling stations in.
I don’t see them going with a year long cup, but they could do a length of stay or even a daily cup. I think Universal has a cup you can buy and get refills all day. Something like that seems doable.

I don't see them going with anything that results in one cent less in profits.
Agreed, that’s why no way they do an annual mug. For daily it depends on how you price it. If you charge something like $16 for the daily mug (I think that’s what Universal’s mug costs) that’s the equivalent of getting someone to buy over 4 regular priced drinks. The cost of the soda is pennies per cup so it’s really all about pricing at or above the average number of drinks a guest would actually buy at full price to keep profits about the same.

Well back then, I worked part time at our local Disney Store and got amazing cast member pricing on our stays there. We got tower rooms for under $100 a night.
Yes indeed. I too got great discounts via The Magic Kingdom Club. I used to check the price for a room at the Motel 6 at 7455 West Irlo Bronson Highway (it's now a Rodeway Inn) and negotiate a comparable price from the All Star Sports. If the manager wouldn't cut us a deal, we'd stay at the Motel 6 and walk the 1.25 kilometers to the All-Star Resort to eat breakfast, buy our lifetime soda mugs and catch the bus to the parks. I told you I was cheap! In walking that route we got to cross Reedy Creek twice each day. Fun times.

My only issue with this has been my issue since I turned 21...bubble wands (or bubble guns, as they were at the time) and a lidless drink. I wind up walking around now unable to DRINK my drink but guarding it from bubbles. Nothing hurts like getting bubbles in your overpriced drink...not even spilling it. If you spill it, it's on the ground and there's nothing you can do. If you get bubbles in it you convince yourself maybe it's okay....it's super not. :hungover: While that used to only apply to alcoholic drinks, it looks like it means everything now.

Universals is something like $14 for the cup and the first day and then around $8 for each day you want to reactivate. Works pretty well I think and $8 is a good price compared to the bottled soda.
But it would be a complete change if Disney were to offer something like this, they have never really gone for the "unlimited" soda offers in parks in the same way Universal and SeaWorld have (Universal used to off 99c refills in almost all reusable cups before moving to the cups with chips in them). Disney currently only offer it in the waterparks and the resort food courts.
Also Disney would have to make it very clear that the separate resort, park and waterpark cups are not interchangeable or make it so you can activate your resort cup in the park etc.
Although I can see it being a good way to cut down on the amount of plastic bottles being sold and the ice used to chill all those 20oz bottles and the staff costs to sell them. If they can get the self-service soda right it could be a good staff cost saving as well as the environmental impact.
