News Disney Plus Now Embedded Into Resort TV’s

This may be old news but I haven’t seen it anywhere else. It appears that Disney Plus is now available to stream directly on TV’s at the resorts. When we stayed at AKL in September this was NOT an option but at check in today at WL when we got in the room it was available.

I know many folks have had questions about this so I thought I’d mention it.
Does Disney count these as subscribers? ;)

I guess it would be even more ridiculous to think they could throw out a “special WDW guest offer for new D+ subscribers” for 3 or 6 months if they subscribe while on property.

A year or so ago, I was part of a focus group on the in-room entertainment devices (TV and Hey Disney!) at Disney resort hotels. Their focus was mostly on the ease of use (or lack thereof) of the devices. One of the areas was casting to your TV for a streaming service and direct access to Disney+ on the TV was brought up by Disney. Most people on the call were surprised Disney+ wasn't included with their stay, and they were more surprised they had to cast from their own device. They expected it to be like other hoteliers who allow you to log in directly on the TV and sign you out automatically on checkout.

While most of the discussion focused on how easy or hard it was to cast from your device to the TV, the moderator asked if people would just spend all their time in their hotel room watching Disney+ if it were free and present on the TV. The response to this was very negative with most comments being, "You're at Disney! You're not there to sit in your hotel room!" Other people commented that people don't sit in their hotel rooms and watch free HBO.

It's sad to see that it took Disney a year to start rolling part of this out, though I consider that progress. It proves they can update the TV software without replacing the TV itself. Now if they could just do that more consistently with other things...

Just shows tone deafness of Disney.

After spending thousands to stay at Disney, you would think that they would have Disney+ free during your stay and a few days after you get home, send an email offering 3-6 months at 50% off to new members for example. But no……

Instead, they offer hotel discounts to Disney+ subscribers! What kind of company treats its streaming service as the premium offering you must buy at full price while its luxury hotels get thrown in to sweeten the pot? You’re watching an infomercial and somehow the $1000/ night hotel is the, “but wait, there’s more!”

Really, it's like inviting someone to stay at your house for the weekend, then charging them a fee for watching your cable.

Very low class. Bad show, as Walt would have put it.
Not really. You still have access to full cable on resort TVs.

Like that's a perk? I've stayed in $130 per night motels that include HBO, Max and/or other "premium" channels in their daily rate. And I'm pretty sure Motel X doesn't own those channels.

Why on earth doesn't Disney include access to Disney+ for their resort hotel guests during their stays? At the worst, people get exposed to the offerings. At best, they might actually decide to subscribe.

And can you even get a $130 per night rate in a Disneyworld resort hotel any more?

This is a no brainer, make it free for guests. I dont know why Disney seems to be cutting back on the little things that keep you in the bubble during your stay.

The only issue is see is them not wanting the spend the money to make it a special version of the app only available at Disney Resorts, not one with a special password that someone would inevitably leak.

Disney doesn’t really want you spending time in your room watching movies. They want you out spending money.

If they’re in the business of “making money” then they should make it free during your stay but you need a credit card for your free trial during that stay and you can choose to keep it after your stay by not cancelling. This isn’t “good business strategy,” it’s just laziness on the part of their IT department.

Marriotts and Hiltons don’t own their own streaming service.
Oh i would 100% make it free at the hotels, to try and get people interested in it. I just was commenting on the poster who was trying to compare people inviting friends to stay at their house, to a business running a hotel.

Going way way back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth and the Disney Channel was a paid cable station, does anyone remember if it was offered free as part of the TV channels offered in the resorts?

They should have made it free to watch in resort rooms since 2019.

Would have been a cheap, exclusive perk to provide.
might have been something as simple as having existing contracts you had to accept...

remember, it's not just the content you see on a TV, but the platform/delivery method too in play..

Families are paying $700+ a night on hotel rooms and $100+ per person per day on park tickets they booked months in advance only to stay in instead and save on a $15 Disney+ subscription?

Yes that makes sense
They only recently just got daily housekeeping back at Deluxe resorts and every other day at moderates, what more do you want from Disney? Room Service? In room refrigerators? Unique and immersive resort theming?
