Following the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney are planning a further 10 episodes of the sci-fi saga.

Episode VIII is currently filming and will drop in 2017, with Episode IX in 2019, and the first of the Star Wars spin-offs Rogue One – starring Forest Whitaker, Sam Claflin, Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen – to be released in December this year.

A source said: ‘the success of The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about.

‘So many characters’ back-stories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year.’

With five further movies, two trilogies and a hat-trick of spin-offs already planned, Disney executives are reportedly discussing another quintet of the sci-fi motion pictures for after 2020.

Episode VII director JJ Abrams, has high hopes for the new storylines, telling the Sun newspaper: ‘There are some really cool things being discussed. It is very exciting to see how it is being put together.’

There is Han Solo and Boba Fett movies in the works, with further solo offerings centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi, (played by Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor in previous movies) and potentially Samuel L. Jackson’s character Mace Windu.

Last year, director A.J. Edwards admitted he was in talks to helm a Star Wars movie based on the Master of the Jedi Order.

‘Talking about it, not able to say a lot yet,’ he said during a Reddit AMA. ‘It will focus on Mace Windu.’

Hoo....ray?

I'm fine with something like 1 SW film a year as long as they are (relatively) independent anthology films. What I mean by that is films that stand on their own with complete stories and aren't part of a ongoing plot between films the way the trilogies are. Certainly they can reference other films. If anything, I think that the SW world is ripe for some major fleshing out in theatrical films, as long as their are quality stories that are written and aren't just being made just to have an annual film. I would love to see some relatively minor characters like Plo Koon or Kit Fisto get a feature film or even better have brand new characters set among the background of established events (kinda the way Star Wars Rebels has been done).

i think they should shift everything forward and do prequels to the prequel trilogy but do it in KOTOR style.. Young Qui Gon being trained by Dooku..

maybe a perfect way to introduce snoke as someone thats been there this whole time

Iger has seen the light. He always understood Marvel's potential but was slower to warm to the galaxy far far away. Great news! I had not heard til now.

My guess is this includes more episodes beyond Ep. 9. Perhaps even a 4th trilogy. :geek:
