In a letter to shareholders, Disney's Robert A. Iger has revealed this first photo from Pixar's WALL• E, opening in theaters in June of 2008. The letter stated:

We're also excited about Pixar's next animated movie, Ratatouille, which will be released this summer. And I'm pleased to give you an exclusive first look at the title character of their next movie, WALL• E (pictured here), which will be released the following year.

Academy Award®-winning director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) helms the animated film.

Cute.
Any word on what the film may be about?

from imdb:

The amassed Wall-E bits and pieces from around the web amount to this: The film is (very nearly) silent with little dialogue - perhaps none at all. It's a love story about Robots in love. The two robots in love - and indeed, most robots we meet - have very different purposes, and therefore designs. WALL is an acronym, E is his series number - so get your think caps on... what does WALL stand for?

This film is considered by 'insiders at Pixar' to be ambitious, very funny and incredibly well conceived.

*sniff, sniff** I can't tell if that's the movie that stinks or if that smell is imdb's BS. Either way, I'm less than thrilled about this. Robots? Real original.

Of course, none can say yet how this movie will turn out, yet I can't help but being pessimistic of a "(very nearly) silent" movie succeeding in today's marketplace.

While I agree in theory, it can be done. It takes extreme creativity and emotion from the animators. If anyone can do this, Pixar's team can. But, I agree that it has a tough road ahead of itself. I think if they pull it off, though, this will help catapult this division/studio to the top of the list in all theatrical regards.

What was the last Disney (or Disney-owned company for those of you who don't think Pixar is Disney) animated movie to be nearly silent? All I can think of is some of the shorts, not a full-length movie.

I can't even think of an animated nearly silent movie from any company recently.....maybe Spirit, that movie about a horse, would count.

Fantasia and Fantasia/2000?

Honestly, I'm a little skeptical of this film, but it's not the first Pixar film I have been skeptical of in concept, and they always deliver winners, so I have faith this will be well done, as well. It is described as a love story and it comes from the director of Finding Nemo, certainly one of Pixar's most emotional films (possibly the most emotional). Ratatouille already looks hilarious, so I think we can assume Pixar now is 8 for 8 with its films...the odds are pretty good that WALL-E will be a winner, too.
