Disney Pixar Studios...

HP won't put Disney out of business, far from it. But a loss of 4M people would be pretty significant (I realize this was a wild hypothetical, but lets run with it).

Since the parks have just returned to their pre 911 attendance levels, it is not clear what the real growth rate (not recovery growth) is. Seems safe to assume its less than 5%/year. A loss of 4M people would represent 3 years worth of future growth. You can bet there would be quite a few cuts if park attendance was stagnant for three years.

But your assumption is that Universal would be taking away people from Disney completely. If anything, I think people would go to Disney and add another day or so to their vacation to see what the new Harry Potterville is all about. I dont think they are going to say, "WOW...lets go to Universal for a week and catch Disney for a day or two...."

I agree. I am a big HP and Simpsons fan, so I'm pumped about the new attractions at Universal. We go to Disney every year, but haven't been to Universal in a long time.

I can tell you for certain that in 2009/10 when the new attractions open, we will be going to Universal for 2-3 days, but that will be in addition to our normal Disney trip.

So, I see Disney staying the course (as far as attendance), but Universal seeing a good increase. I don't forsee Disney losing any attendance from HP coming.

To quote a friend of mine:

"One point I do feel deserves stressing is I do think many people will wind up cutting a day or two off their Disney stays ... and that may be conservative as Uni is known for offering ticket specials that could encourage more visits.

I truly believe this area will attract throngs of Disney guests ... the kind who have never gone to Uni before, not the folks who already have been and/or continue to spend a day or two there on their vacations. Nope. These are those guests who are so blinded by pixie dust they would rather pay $40 for lousy Disney fast food rather than drive to 192 or 535 and spend $15 instead. They don't leave WDW property.

That's why again this is so huge. Because their kiddies and maybe even their own affection for the HP properties are going to push them off-property and that's when they may see there are so many other options for dining, shopping and (even worse for the Mouse) accomodations ...

This development has the potential to hurt Disney in O-Town like nothing else in recent memory."

Thats what I think too, even with Potter its still just a day and 1/2 for both parks. People will still plan Disney first then make time for universal. So they may lose 1 day to universal. But thats if Disney leaves potter unchallenged, and I dont see them doing that at all.

As for the name change thing, the only thing I think I could get used to is "the disney studios" I hope the pixar name stays out of it. Put it in the park, rename streets, buildings, whatever you want. But dont put it into the name of the park.

Doesnt sound like a real confident statement to me.

This sounds like someone who has something against Disney.

I dont really think so. Case in point. Nick Hotel just outside of main gate. Kids have wanted to stay there ever since they saw it, yet we never have. Probably wont either considering its expensive as heck.

This development has the potential to hurt Disney in O-Town like nothing else in recent memory."
Actually 911 will have hurt Disney more than this in "recent memory".

Maybe they should call it Disney-CBS-Cayuga-Productions Studios.

Wait! I forgot about Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Casablanca and Alien!

So Disney-MGM-Cayuga-Paramount-Fox-Warner Brothers-Lucasfilm Studios!

Feel free to make the list longer as you remember movies referenced in The Studios I forgot!

Uhhh...you forgot Aerosmith. Personally, I think The Disney-Steven Tyler Studios has quite a ring to it! :D

So Disney-MGM-Cayuga-Paramount-Fox-Warner Brothers-Lucasfilm-Aerosmith-Muppets Studio!

So Disney is like the WWE and Universal Is TNA.... Without any competition the WWE (disney) became lazy with their product and stayed stagnent.. Then TNA came along and in turn made the wwe work harder .. in theory.. So maybe with Universal getting Harry Potter Disney will make an announcement with something to answer back to Harry Potter.......Or maybe Disney feels they have enough already and will sit back...

You're also assuming Universal will still be offering these ticket specials after they drop loads of cash on Potter and The Simpsons. First, will they be able to offer them financially? Probably not. Second, will they want to if they feel they have a big enough draw to better compete with Disney? Doubt it.

I think there will be an initial reaction to the WWoHP opening up at IoA, but I seriously doubt it'll maintain anything - and that's coming from someone who's a bigger Potter fan than a Disney fan. It's simple aesthetics at the end of the day - while yes, your previous points about stagnation at the Disney parks bears at least some merit, the bottom line is people remember and are drawn to the Disney parks because they're welcoming and feel like a different place.

I've been to IoA, and I have to say I was not impressed with the overall park. I didn't feel like I was entering a different world or that I was now in some special place - I felt like I was a couple blocks off of I-Drive and at a park that had no real draw to it.

Marvel Island is horrendous - the upkeep on the area is one of the worst I've ever seen. The Comic Strip island is fairly interesting, and well themed, but it's nothing spectacular. Jurassic Park is alright, Seuss Island is more visually offensive than anything I've ever seen at a park. In fact, the only place I liked was the Lost Continent, and now that's going the way of the dodo.

Walking into any of the Disney parks, I feel like I'm entering a different place and I'm stepping away from reality for a day or two, or a week if it's my yearly vacation. Sure, there's things I wish would change - I don't think any Disney fan would say differently - but overall it's run better, it's more well maintained, and it just feels right. I don't get that at Universal.

And to your point about the food prices and accomodations - really? Most people stay on property for the ambiance. Heck, I live 30 minutes from the parks and we stay on property about 4 times a year just because it's more fun to do so. As far as food prices go - yes, you can go to 192 or 525 and get some grub, but that food is terrible in most cases. I'd rather spend the $40 and get something I know I like (chicken fingers, cheeseburger at Cosmic Rays, anything in Mexico) than roll the dice at a Taco Bell or Ponderosa.

Do you get that at Dino-RAMA? or the broken down beat up attractions at the MK? Haunted Mansion is finally getting a rehab after it has been totally run into the ground for years! Fantasyland at WDW is totally stuck in the 70s...you will never look at WDW's fantasyland again after you have seen californias, japans, or paris's and im not talking about the rides that are absent from floridas..im even talking about rides like peter pan and snow white which have been upgraded with new theming and technology while the florida versions just stay the same with fourty year old effects and technology. All of the new additions to the park in the past five years have been subpar with the exception of two (Soarin, everest). Despite what the 5 people here think Mission:Space is not this great ride that the general public or even most disney fans love in the same way as Splash Mountain or Indiana Jones. Monsters inc. and Stitch are both terrible.

Ambiance? at the delux resorts maybe. There is no ambiance at a place like all-star. Although you disagree, the food at the MK has got to be the most generic overpriced food ever.

I dont personally, but my kids do.

 First, allthough I tend to agree that there is more ambiance at a deluxe resort than at the value resorts, the value resorts do serve to provide on site lodging to people who are looking at a more economical place to stay. I would argue that alot of those guests are not looking for alot of ambiance....

So, what are your specific suggestions to improve it while keeping prices at a level that people would expect to pay at a resort, satisfy the dietary preferences of a huge number of people, and be readily easy to prepare to meet the demands of crowd size.

You have been doing a good job of slamming, how bout some of those specific ideas of what you would do if you were in charge of attractions, resorts, and dining?

First of all, those were in response to somebody else not you. I notice that you are extremly quick to attempt to counter anything negative said about the Walt Disney Company. Are you on their payroll perhaps or do you just love disney so blindly you will accept any mediocre garbage they throw your way?

Secondly, I could elaborate and explain but it is clear to me that I am wasting my time discussing these matters with someone like yourself since you are so stuck in your way of thinking that you can not be helped. All I can hope is that the Walt Disney Company will look at what the majority of folks are saying and not the one or two people who continue to say "Nope nothing wrong with Disney everything they do is SUPER!"
