HP won't put Disney out of business, far from it. But a loss of 4M people would be pretty significant (I realize this was a wild hypothetical, but lets run with it).
Since the parks have just returned to their pre 911 attendance levels, it is not clear what the real growth rate (not recovery growth) is. Seems safe to assume its less than 5%/year. A loss of 4M people would represent 3 years worth of future growth. You can bet there would be quite a few cuts if park attendance was stagnant for three years.
But your assumption is that Universal would be taking away people from Disney completely. If anything, I think people would go to Disney and add another day or so to their vacation to see what the new Harry Potterville is all about. I dont think they are going to say, "WOW...lets go to Universal for a week and catch Disney for a day or two...."

Thats what I think too, even with Potter its still just a day and 1/2 for both parks. People will still plan Disney first then make time for universal. So they may lose 1 day to universal. But thats if Disney leaves potter unchallenged, and I dont see them doing that at all.But your assumption is that Universal would be taking away people from Disney completely. Doesnt sound like a real confident statement to me.To quote a friend of mine:
"One point I do feel deserves stressing is I do think many people will wind up cutting a day or two off their Disney stays ... and that may be conservative as Uni is known for offering ticket specials that could encourage more visits.."
This sounds like someone who has something against Disney.I truly believe this area will attract throngs of Disney guests ... the kind who have never gone to Uni before, not the folks who already have been and/or continue to spend a day or two there on their vacations. Nope. These are those guests who are so blinded by pixie dust they would rather pay $40 for lousy Disney fast food rather than drive to 192 or 535 and spend $15 instead. They don't leave WDW property.
I dont really think so. Case in point. Nick Hotel just outside of main gate. Kids have wanted to stay there ever since they saw it, yet we never have. Probably wont either considering its expensive as heck. That's why again this is so huge. Because their kiddies and maybe even their own affection for the HP properties are going to push them off-property and that's when they may see there are so many other options for dining, shopping and (even worse for the Mouse) accomodations ...
Actually 911 will have hurt Disney more than this in "recent memory".This development has the potential to hurt Disney in O-Town like nothing else in recent memory."
Maybe they should call it Disney-CBS-Cayuga-Productions Studios.
Wait! I forgot about Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Casablanca and Alien!
So Disney-MGM-Cayuga-Paramount-Fox-Warner Brothers-Lucasfilm Studios!
Feel free to make the list longer as you remember movies referenced in The Studios I forgot!
Uhhh...you forgot Aerosmith. Personally, I think The Disney-Steven Tyler Studios has quite a ring to it!

Walking into any of the Disney parks, I feel like I'm entering a different place and I'm stepping away from reality for a day or two, or a week if it's my yearly vacation. Sure, there's things I wish would change - I don't think any Disney fan would say differently - but overall it's run better, it's more well maintained, and it just feels right. I don't get that at Universal.
And to your point about the food prices and accomodations - really? Most people stay on property for the ambiance. Heck, I live 30 minutes from the parks and we stay on property about 4 times a year just because it's more fun to do so. As far as food prices go - yes, you can go to 192 or 525 and get some grub, but that food is terrible in most cases. I'd rather spend the $40 and get something I know I like (chicken fingers, cheeseburger at Cosmic Rays, anything in Mexico) than roll the dice at a Taco Bell or Ponderosa.
I dont personally, but my kids do.Do you get that at Dino-RAMA?
First, allthough I tend to agree that there is more ambiance at a deluxe resort than at the value resorts, the value resorts do serve to provide on site lodging to people who are looking at a more economical place to stay. I would argue that alot of those guests are not looking for alot of ambiance....Ambiance? at the delux resorts maybe. There is no ambiance at a place like all-star.
So, what are your specific suggestions to improve it while keeping prices at a level that people would expect to pay at a resort, satisfy the dietary preferences of a huge number of people, and be readily easy to prepare to meet the demands of crowd size.Although you disagree, the food at the MK has got to be the most generic overpriced food ever.
You have been doing a good job of slamming, how bout some of those specific ideas of what you would do if you were in charge of attractions, resorts, and dining?
