Disney/MGM Studios Expansion

Expand into the parking lot...and build a parking garage across World Drive (is it?)....then have the trams (or some sort of light rail) transport guest to the park enterance....thats the second easiest way I think...

How about the animation building...do they really need a huge building to be standing there vacant? Whatever is left of the actual studio part of the park should be removed and that space could be used for expansion...all because the theme is "movie studio" doesn't mean there has to actually be one there...I mean is it even a true working studio anymore?

I think the studios is the most disorganized park in WDW....I just hope sometime down the line things change....just my opinion...

Well, I believe someone at WDI has talked about expanding MGM across World Drive. While this may be difficult, (on the other hand, think footbridge) I think it would be very interesting to see what they could do with an extra 60 or so acres of studio.

I think this was in the plans when they were going to expand production facilities. Since they no longer make movies at MGM, this may be out.

Part of the problem with the "not so great" layout of MGM is that it was too popular when it opened. When MGM opened, most of the park was not accessable to guests. The only places guests were permitted were the Echo Lake and Entrance areas (known then as the Theme park side) and the Animation Courtyard (the Studios side)

Guests would board the 2+ hour tram/walking tour from the Animation Courtyard area.

Mickey Avenue, the Commisary area, and the backlot were all closed to guests.

These areas had to be opened up, as MGM was getting almost as many guests as Epcot, and was way over crowded.

With the 1994 expansion of Sunset Blvd, this was not a major problem much longer, but now look at the gridlock on Sunset, with 4 major attractions in 1 area....during peak times, this area is crazy.

I don't agree that the Indy ride should go near the Auto Stunt Show...makes no sense. MGM already has an Indy themed area, and even if they close the Indy show, that general area is already themed....why spend a bunch of money on new scenery when the old stuff looks just fine (and if they choose to go this route, dont complain when the budget it cut)....on the other hand, I would rather see the Indy ride go into Adventureland at MK.

Bring on the Muppet dark ride/adventure to MGM. :D

No more room on Residential St. for a new attraction of any size.
"If" Indy gets the final greenlight (hasn't yet, but is close) it will go either in the place of the old Stunt Show, or on the spot of Backlot Express and some backstage areas. That's not just Disney's idea, but is somethng Lucas stipulated some time back.

Expansion of the park is possible, with the most likely scenario being the one already mentioned. Expand the park into the existing parking lot, and create a new lot/structure across World Drive with shuttle service to the park.

There are other plans for the Animation building.

Plans for the animation building? Care to elaborate?

Well, at least part of it is going to be modified with some of the stuff from DCA's animation attraction...so I hear.

16 April 2003: Animation Tour expansion

With the closure of the Florida Animation group, the studios are left with a large building attached to the existing animation tour that previously held 300+ animators. This building is now being converted into providing a more extensive animation tour to park guests. It appears that more elements from the DCA version of the tour will be added, including the interactive Sorcerer's Workshop.

Thanks Lee...that does make sense (both the indy placement and the new setup for MGM). If they close the Backlot Express, I wouldn't mind seeing a new restaurant themed to George Lucas movies in that area...that would be very neat :)

As we all know the most reliable information about future projects at WDW can be had from anyone in transportation

In May a Friendship captain told all the passengers to be sure and see the Indiana Jones Stunt show at MGM because it would be closing soon to make way for the Indiana Jones ride from Disneyland.

Later that day I asked the CMs in the Indiana Jones shop when the stunt show would be closing and they had no idea what I was talking about.

I just hope when they add to the Amination Tour, that they would renovate the outside to look like the one in DCA or something new. The outside of the Amination looks really neat in California. Also, I wouldn't mind them shuting down the attraction and totally renovate it and reopen it good as new.

That's good. I like where Ursula 'steals' your voice and all that.

I remember reading that about the animation attraction rumor (very exciting)...but are they using the whole former animation building or just parts of it?

:sohappy:

Any word on what exactly is being talked about as possible attractions for a possible expansion?

I would love for MGM to expand. Maybe they could put Residential Street in a new place. I'm such a dreamer! With rumors flying around about a Harry Potter ride who knows what kind of cool things could happen within the next 5 - 10 yrs.

Eh... don't know how much breath I would hold for Harry. Personally, I want the see Maroon Studios get built. That would really add a ton to the park. It would be even cooler if they did the main street area of it all indoors like Disney Studios, only with a much more cartoony feel.

Pardon me... I'm gonna go watch Roger Rabbit now.
