Disney-MGM Studios Contract??

I was watching the Disney MGM Studios History and one thing popped out at me. Disney signed a 20 year contract with MGM on June 27th, 1985. That means on June 27th of this year that contract will expire. Does anybody know if this situation has been resolved or if theres a deal in the works? And if not, what will happen if that contract expires? From what I figure, They would have to remove all references to MGM which if you look around that is quite the undertaking. i.e. Merchandise, Signage in and outside the park, Park maps, Name Badges and alot more i'm sure. What about all the MGM Movie references? Anybody got any additional information?

It's still called the Disney-MGM Studios.

CMs have been told to never call the park MGM Studios... they're supposed to call it Disney-MGM Studios or The Studios or the Disney Studios. Pal Mickey calls it the Movie Studio.

If the contract is not renewed (and Sony isn't really leaning towards renewing it) then Disney has a lot of signs to change. The rights to the MGM movie scenes in the Great Movie Ride are secured under other contracts, not the same contract as the park's name.

And not many movies are really MGM to begin with. Most of the MGM movies are Time Warner now. (Wizard of Oz)

Wow, Very interesting. I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens in June. I know i've always called it just the "MGM Studios", probably will for a long time regardless. Gonna be wierd having that name stripped away. I live in Houston and I still call our baseball stadium "Enron Field" and the Compaq Center is still "The Summit". I guess i'm just hard-headed. :hammer::lol:

Oh, And if you haven't checked out the Disney-MGM Studios history video on #Disney-Central, I highly recommend it. Excellent video.

i do not know about a resolve of the problem but i know that is why mgm has been called just disney studios for a few years now. i think it is to get people ready for the change over. even the acronym is ds now. i hope that helped sorry if it didn't.

Your incorrect information has not helped...

The park is still the Disney-MGM Studios, and the only places Disney's been calling it Disney Studios is overseas, because of a lawsuit filed by MGM against Disney a few years back. Disney can't use the MGM name anywhere outside the US.

US Vacation Planning DVDs go up to Canada... hence why you'll see it called Disney Studios on those DVDs.

CMs have been trained to say just Disney Studios or The Studios instead of MGM because the full park name is a mouth full.

MGM is a fading name... nothing in the park has to do with MGM execpt for a very small handfull of scenes in the Great Movie Ride.

There's really no reason to keep the MGM name... except cost of removal...

But the park is still currently called Disney-MGM Studios. WDWhumanmap is incorrect about that one.

If I remember correctly, all the parks were closed (due to reaching maximum capacity) to everyone except resort guests on Dec. 31, 1999
