Disney Magical Express-Am I signed up?

What is the process for signing up for Disney Magical Express? I received luggage tags in the mail like the ones attached here. Does that mean I’m signed up? Or are these the tags they give you ONLY if you want them to handle your luggage (we’d rather do it ourselves).

It looks like this is where you make the actual reservation to be on the bus? And the tags I received are if you want them to handle the luggage?

No, those don't mean that you are signed up for DME. Disney just gives those to you as a 'gift' with your info packet. Have you ever given Disney your flight information? In doing so, that's how you will sign up for DME and based on your arrival time to MCO, you will just follow the signs to the buses, check in, and get on board with your luggage. Just give them a call and have your Disney reservation number handy!

If you are signed up, you will receive a DME package in the mail separately from the Disney Vacation package those luggage tags came in. The DME package includes a booklet that will indicate your flight info if they have it and one yellow tag, similar to the airline luggage strips that have barcodes indicating your destination, per person on your reservation. The yellow tags are only included if you live in North America.

If you haven't received the DME package within a week or two of departure, you can phone DME directly and provide your flight info directly. Since you don't want/need the yellow tags, they can book you up to a couple of days before your arrival. If you arrive without a reservation, DME cannot transport you to your resort [as I understand it, that's a condition of their contract with the airport].

Ok, thanks for the help. Do you think it's worth it to have Disney handle your luggage? I'm kind of leaning towards not having them do it because it'll be close to bedtime for my kids and I'd worry I'd forget something in the luggage and have to wait.

Though we always arrive in the morning, we prefer to take our own things with us. It's a very easy process. We check in, and more likely than not, our room isn't ready yet, but we leave our luggage with the bellhop at the resort and go straight to the parks. For your situation arriving at night, your room should definitely be ready, so you can just go straight there with your stuff.

When you're at the airport, DME will stick your bags in the compartment under the bus. It's not like you need to jam a suitcase in between your legs or anything.

There are good and bad aspects to either taking your bags or letting DME handle them.

If you don't use the yellow tags, you have to go to baggage claim and retrieve them yourselves. It can take up to 40 minutes before your bags reach the carousel and if perchance the airline has mis-routed your bags, you have to do all the paperwork with the airline. This can delay getting to WDW. On the other hand, you have your bags with you immediately and can access whatever you need right away.

If you do use the tags, you generally will arrive at WDW sooner. Your bags will normally arrive in your resort room [whether you're there or not] within 3-4 hours of your plane landing. You can aleady be having fun in the parks and your bags will be waiting when you return. If your bags happen to be mis-routed by the airline, DME initiates the airline tracking process on your behalf and in many cases you'll only know it happened because your luggage will have an extra tag or two on it when you get back to your room.

In either scenario, it's advisable to include in carry-on any necessary medications and changes of cloths in case your bag doesn't make it right away.

If your flight is scheduled to arrive at MCO after 10PM, you should not use the yellow tags and plan to pick up your bags anyway, as the DME luggage service stops at 10. If your flights are delayed past 10, they should still process your bags.

If you're arriving after, say, 6pm, and all you want to do it go to your room and unpack and settle in - absolutely get your own bags.

DME only promises a maximum 3-hour delivery time, and if you're not immediately heading out to parks when you get checked into your resort, you're pretty much SOL if you wanted to unpack, clean up or anything else.

As others have said, MCO is not known for it's baggage handling speed. It takes FOREVER for bags to get from the plane to the carousel. 40 minutes is not an exaggeration. So, if you want to get your own bags (and I recommend doing so), take your time getting off the plane....stop for a potty break....walk slowly....ride the tram....walk slowly....and then find a place for the family to sit while you wait for the bags.

And if you get your own bags, DO NOT use the yellow tags that you'll be getting in the mail. You can, however, use those red ones in your photo - those are just novelty luggage tags that you put your contact info on. The yellow ones will look like the barcoded ones the airport puts on. You will only want the airport's white tags - not your yellow ones.

The DME yellow tags are not always separate. In many cases, with a MYW package, the yellow tags are included in the package documentation along with the Mickey tags. The MYW document also has a line item stating that you are using Magical Express.

Also, keep your Magicbands ready when approaching the DME area! One person taps their Magicband, and the Cast Member will direct you to the line you are to go to for your bus.

We never got anything Magical Express in the mail, but our wristbands got us in no problem. They didn't even ask for any paperwork, just one wristband from our family. Easy. In fact, our wristbands were truly the only thing you need to have a pretty good time at WDW. That and your phone to check FP+, hours, wait times, and take photos.

My suggestion is to try and pack everything in carry-ons, and use DME for the ride only. Because if the airlines don't mishandle your bags, DME just might. Of course, this isn't always feasible. In that case, make sure you have a carry-on packed with important stuff that you'll need upon arrival to your room; shorts, t-shirt, sunglasses, yada yada yada. DME will take some time to get your bags to your room, *especially* if you arrive at night.

To utilize DME a DVC member must contact member services. Weather you will get those tags? Don't think so.
