Disney Is Selling a Joy Division Mickey Mouse Shirt

The art is public domain, the issue was never the artwork. Disney explicitly called it a Joy Division inspired shirt with seemingly no knowledge of the band.

Someone probably filled them in on the anti semitic origins of the band name. Not really an association Disney wants to be making with their brand especially considering the longstanding rumors about Walt Disney.

I really never knew the history of the name either until you mentioned it and a quick Google search.

Although credit for this design might go to JD, there's nothing about pulse patters (or whatever you want to call it) that's inherently original to JD. That's like Disney selling a line of hot pink wigs and attributing the "inspiration" to Nikci Minaj. They existed before, and will continue to exist long after, said "inspiration." This style of "art" could just have easily been attributed to Radiohead, or anyone else.

smart move to pull the shirt. if not for the negative connotations from the name Joy Division, for the large amount of backlash the shirt got.

edit: actually I also think its a bit knee-jerk. Will they suddenly someday sit down and listen to Aerosmith's lyrics, decide they do not fit the Disney image, and remove them from RnRc?

Heck, you figure Steven doing the shocker during the studio portion of RnRc would be enough to get them removed! :lookaroun

Let me just say that I love Joy Divison. While I like the artwork for the shirt, it just seems hypocritical on Disney's part. I'm confused, because Joy Division is just so hilariously different from everything Disney represents it is funny. I'm not arguing against the sale of this shirt, but I just think it is the most peculiar thing I've seen them try to market in a long time.

...which is exactly what makes this JD attribution so ridiculous. :brick:

While they didn't have to name it a Joy Division t-shirt, anyone who is familiar with pop culture/alternative music art could easily recognize that as the artwork for Unknown Pleasures...it really doesn't have specific significance otherwise, from what I can tell. The design has become a famous design because of Joy Division.
