The Walt Disney Co. aims to give Mattel’s American Girl doll franchise a run for its money this holiday season. Disney has introduced Princess & Me dolls into the popular 18-inch doll market, and it’s doing so at a lower price point.
Princess & Me dolls sell for $49.99, compared with American Girl dolls, which start at $95. Girls can choose from Cinderella, Ariel, Aurora, Tiana and Belle. After each doll is registered, its owner will receive a letter on her birthday from her favorite princess.
Although the Disney line does not yet have the depth of products that American Girl has developed during the past 24 years, there are similar choices. For example, girls can get princess gowns in their own sizes to match their dolls’ dresses for $49.99. Coordinating clothing has long been a hallmark of American Girl.
There also are outfits for the dolls ($14.99 to $24.99), and a few accessories, such as a vanity set ($14.99), a tea set ($19.99), a wardrobe ($39.99) and a canopy bed for ($49.99).
Analysts say that price isn’t everything, however, when it comes to 18-inch dolls. American Girl dolls represent different periods in history and can be customized to look like their owners. The popular dolls are backed by their own exclusive stores and movies. One toy-industry analyst expects this year’s American Girl sales to surpass the record $463 million in both 2008 and 2009, Bloomberg.com reports.
Still, in this economy, having a less-expensive option will no doubt be welcome news for some customers.

I love that they have these. I am a little to old to be playing with dolls.
But I do love that they came out with these. Now i dont think they will pose
much of a threat to the american girl company since they have been around a long time, but the Disney dolls are adorable. Im sad to hear that there isnt any Rapunzel, Snow White, Alice, Mulan, and Pocahontas And Jasmine. I would love an Alice one but i dont think she is princess. So they wont make one but im sure they will deff make Snow White and Jasmine. Pocahontas and Mulan are forgotten princess! =(
