Disney Gets Slaughtered at the Box Office

Check out the estimates for Friday at Box Office Mojo:

Country Bears debuted in 6th with only $1.7 million, and Reign of Fire was knocked down to 8th with a gross of only $988,000. Goldmember debuted at #1 with a gross $27.1 million.

It is safe to say that the Studios will be posting a very meager profit this year, if any. :(

Based on what I've seen and heard, "Country Bears" is gonna get about what it deserves.

I don't feel too sorry for them; when you just slap together a movie and stick a recognizable name on it like "Country Bears," people aren't gonna be fooled.

When you actually pour a lot of effort into a film and make a real attempt at putting out a quality product like "Lilo & Stitch," you will (usually) be rewarded.

Third-rate movies may sell like hotcakes in the direct-to-video market, but mediocre offerings aren't gonna cut it at the box office.

As for "Reign of Fire"--haven't seen it, but it looks pretty cool, so I'm not sure what the story is there.

That doesn't surprise me. The Country Bears looked so stupid in the previews I know I won't be paying to go see it, and might not even rent it. It's a shame too, they could have done it up right if they wanted to.

UPDATE: Weekend estimates say that the Bears will debut with only $5.2 million, good enough for a 6th place finish.

In other news, Reign of Fire experienced a SHARP decline off of last weekends totals (54%), and could only muster $3.3 million for an 8th place finish. Look for RoF to drop off of the top ten next weekend.

Well, Lilo and Stitch is going to be 11th or 12th depending on final numbers.

While I think it was a bad decision to release TCB in the summer against major blockbusters, I think it would have done better if released in say a slow period for major movies.

I didn't expect much from the movie considering:

Austin Powers 3 opened this weekend. It's already grossed more than AP1 did its entire run.

Stuart Little 2 is a good movie, only in its 2nd week. It had a strong basis in last week and the 1st movie to draw an audience.

MIB2 is still strong based on the original and earlier weeks.

You have major star power in the theatres right now. Mike Myers (Austin Powers), Tom Hanks and Paul Newman (Road to Perdition), Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (MIB2), Harrison Ford and Liam Neisen (K19).

Compare this to Country Bears where you have no top actors, except appearing in voice talent. I don't know if any of the actors voicing the bears are or not.

I'm not trying to make excuses for the total flop. I have a problem with the movie in general, but also for Disney's marketing of the movie and the decision to release it in a blockbuster movie period.

Apparently that’s the problem. From what I’ve heard, most people who HAVE seen it are wondering what the story is, too…

Sad part is that this is probably fine with Disney who reportedly only spent about $20 million to make this movie. After video, it’s a guaranteed money maker. So much so that they started planning for a direct to video sequel before this one even hit theaters.
