Disney Frustration

Just want to vent a little. You might have read a couple of postings on how we’re trying to find the best room situation for our family of five, including three teenaged or beyond kids. We prefer the Epcot area and debated squeezing us into a BC room (2 queens and a day bed) vs. two rooms at the Swan. We’ve stayed at BC twice and GF three times in one room and it’s worked. But with the kids grown this will probably be our last vacation at WDW with all of us, so my wife and I thought we’d make it special and splurge for a 2 bedroom BC villa (at $545 a night). Turns out they are booked for the only time we can all get away this summer. So we thought we’d go down to two studio villas (at $289 each, or $578). Since a 2 bedroom villa is essentially a one bedroom and studio combined, I realized that I’m overpaying – less space yet $33 more per night. So I thought I’d see if I could get the 2 bedroom rate. I will say the reservationist and his manager were very friendly, but there was absolutely no budging or negotiating room whatsoever. Despite the logic, and despite our option of getting two rooms at the Swan (with a sizable discount since my wife is a teacher) they would not offer any type of discount at all.

Now I suppose they figure they will sell those rooms to someone else at the full rate (and with the 2 bedrooms sold out already I guess I can believe that). Still, it was surprising to me that they were so stringent. I mentioned it was our 28th anniversary during that time – but after saying “congratulations” it was still $578 per night. For $400 per night we can get an executive suite at the Dolphin and have a sizable amount of money left over. But that’s not our first choice. The kids prefer BC, and we’d love to make this as perfect as possible. But at the same time we want to teach them some life skills – when a consumer has a choice, a company should make some accommodations, especially to a repeat customer (they know we’ve stayed at BC and GF five times because they looked it up as we were talking). There is a limit to what something is worth - they set the limit by saying a 2 bedroom villa is $545, so two studios isn’t worth more than that.

So we’ll likely end up at the Swan / Dolphin, and from everything I’ve read I’m sure we will like it very much. It’s just too bad Disney couldn’t bend just a little to make our last family trip there special.

Discount for teachers and also for military is at least 50% off the rack rate. There are some limitations on the dates and also a limited number of rooms at that rate, but I've never read anyone not getting the rate when they qualify. A regular room (two queens at the Swan) is $129 before tax and resort fee. It's a great deal, and as I type this I really question my sanity in considering spending $545 a night - I coul get three rooms for that price and still come out ahead. By the way, they will reserve up to three rooms at the teacher / military discount. I'm not sure, but I assume military applies to veterans as well as active personnel.

Hey WWW!

You made some VERY valid points there!

Your vacation will be special- not because of the hotel - but because it may be the last "family" vacation together, as you mentioned!

Staying at the The SWAN/DOLPHIN Hotels will make it even more special because it's not the "same old thing", and, more importantly, think of the $$$$$$$ you'll have saved to treat the gang to some special activiites or dinners while you are there!!!

Make it special by saving the money on your room and picking out some special thing you've never done togeheter on previous trips.
The Illuminations Boat ride comes to mind....or The Hoop-Dee-Doo Review Dinner Show.....or maybe even a Keys to the Kingdom Tour!

I'd make the same choice. I know the value of a dollar too, and if I wanted to throw some away, I'd much rather throw it at my family to enjoy!!!

Have a GREAT trip!

:)

Thanks for the suggestions. We already decided on Hoop-De-Doo the night of our anniversary (which will be the 4th time seeing it, but it's a great family time, plus we'll get to dance for our anniversary, which we did once before but didn't have our camcorder with us). I've been thinking about one of the tours, but I forgot about the Illuminations boat cruise. That's a great suggestion. I'll start getting some info on that and "Keys", and get the family excited about doing something different. I'm also determined to stay at MK one night until we're told to leave - hopefully we'll see the "Goodnight Kiss". While this will likely be our last trip as a family, I suspect we'll be back again at some time with one or more of the kids when they have kids of their own. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Two bedroom villas at Boadwalk were sold out for our time period also. We could have gotten one at one of the other places, but we really want the Epcot / Studios area. Thanks for the suggestion. I do want to spend more time at the Boardwalk than we did the last time we stayed at BC.

Because Dolphin/Swan are not Disney, Disney does not have to match thier prices, which makes sense. On our last trip over Christmas and New Years, which we planned late, we could not get our usual 10 nights at Caribbean Beach, so we went to Dolphin for 3 nights with the 100YoM Birthday Special (for me, as it was my b'day) and the rooms for the 3 nights were only $100/night, compared to CB where the rooms were over $250 for the holiday rates. Thats a deluxe 5star hotel (i think, compared to CB which is def. not--but we will take CB over Dolphin anyday!)

Not that Disney should lower rates to the Dolphin level, (we got the teacher discount rate in addition at Dolphin) but they should too have some type of special for teachers/militaries/registered nurses just like the Dolphin, not as dramatic, but something nonetheless. You can find good Disney Resort savings, dont get me wrong, but you have to FIND/SEARCH for them whereas the Dolphin it's like, "I'm a teacher!"

Did I ramble??? haha

I would look in to Wilderness Lodge. Even though you like the Epcot area...you may want to give the MK area a try. The resort is nice and you would be very close to the MK.

To WWW: Beware the Keys of the Kingdom Tour! It is the biggest let down. The majority of the tour consisted of tons of disney trivia, most of which as a disney fan you will know or you will learn at One Man's Dream at MGM. I took this tour because at my last trip at disney in 2001 I was told that this tour takes you through the underground and backstage. Apparently, due to security concerns as a result of 9/11 your tour is very restricted. They took us briefly into the basement, past the employee luncheon room, which we weren't allowed to enter, shown the trash vacums, and then across a hall and out. At one point during the tour we were taken to a room above the Main Street shops and we were shown a wall display where they discussed costumes, hair and makeup and told that those departments are now off limits. They only part of the tour i enjoyed involved going behind Splash mt. and being shown all the parade floats up close. I actually got to see a character take off his costume. I will admit I learned alot of little interesting tidbits, but unless you are diehard disney fans you'll be bored. Alot of the information they provide involves cast members and disney employee philosophy. Your kids i guarantee you will be bored to death. Our tour guide was very nice but the tour was just dreadful. We couldn't wait for it to end and called it quits 1/2 hour early.

Thanks for the advice. I just read several reports on the tour from Deb Wills' site and got the same impression. The main reason I'd want to do it is to see the ultilidors, and it looks like that is a very minor part of the tour. I also read that the Illuminations boat cruise can be disappointing if the wind is blowing the smoke from the fireworks your way.

check that out you want to look at the ones that say they can book 11 months in advance because that is there home resort i see someone on there that is selling some now it would be 350 points for a week at that time of year so most people sell them for around 10 dollars a point that would be 3500.00 and that would come out to 500 a night somtimes you can even get them for less. so check it out i wish you the best of luck i know how it feels to try to get everyting just so for you vacation. i always try but it is so hard either way you will be there and once your there im sure you will have a great time

www: The utilidor section of the tour is unfortunately very minor. In fact, they keep you in a hallway the entire time. Basically, they have you cross over from one side of main street to the other via the utilidor. What is so ridiculous about the entire security concern issue/excuse, is that prior to taking you down into the utilidor they take you backstage to the area where they work on the jungle cruise boats. Well guess what is next to the jungle cruise boats...giant propane tanks. Same goes for the section they take you to see the parade floats. If you really want to do the tour and are a die hard fan, only do it if you are there for an extended amount of time and have time to kill..And again spare the children.

I suggest trying to purchase dvc points for your visit. In any event, treat your teenagers to a "cruise" on Breathless. It is a renovated runabout at the dock outside of the Yacht Club. What a great treat. My two teenagers loved it - and so did my wife and I. It is great fun - I have described it as an "E Ticket". If you believe this will be your last trip all together, this will make a memory taht will last.

I understand that you really want BC but you should consider the Deluxe room (Jr. Suite) at Wilderness Lodge. It legally sleeps six. It's considerably less than a two Bedroom at BCV. It doesn't have cooking facilities. They can sometimes be had with discount codes. Check out www.wdwig.com for a floor plan and pricing. Just look under Wilderness Lodge in the accomodations section.
