Disney film chairman quits
Schneider to start Broadway production firm with Disney funding
June 20, 2001: 5:02 p.m. ETNEW YORK (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co. said on Wednesday that Peter Schneider, the chairman of its film and television studios and a 16-year veteran executive, will resign to start an independent Broadway production company.
Disney (DIS: up $0.40 to $29.25, Research, Estimates) will provide part of the funding for that new venture, Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Michael Eisner said in a statement.
No replacement was named and Disney said three executives would absorb Schneider's responsibilities while remaining in their present posts.
Schneider had been chairman of The Walt Disney Studios since January 2000 and had previously served as its president. Before that, he had headed Disney's legendary feature animation unit.
Eisner said Schneider had been "at the center of our incredible creative successes in animation and the legitimate theater."
