I am surprised no one has patented this before. Gaze tracking has been around for a while, for example it's been used to determine where people look when shown a commercial, or web page.

Edit: Reading it a little closer it appears it's for a technique that could be used for eye tracking at long range, so that is probably what is patentable here.

This patent could be for the Navi shaman animatronic.

It was filed in 2013, which seems like the right date for somthing Pandora-related.

Also, the first first look at the animatronic shows eye movement. The second first look (the one from the D23 event in November) shows the animatronic supposedly turning its focus to someone else. Of course the eyes could just be programmed this way... so I don't know, it's hard to get a read on them.

Just something to ponder.

The patent isn't actually for a "animatronic figure that follows you", it's for eye tracking technology and mentions in the introduction that this is one thing it could be used for.

Well, if it can track your gaze, wouldn't it ideally be able to make eye contact with you? I didn't actually read the whole patent so I could be wrong.

Though I did go back and read enough to figure that this isn't being used for Pandora. Sounds like a lot of work is needed before this could effectively be put to use.

Yeah, that is a likely use, just clarifying that what is being patented is eye tracking, not how the eye tracking will be used.
