I think picking a specific subset of IP and sticking to it could help the escape room stand out; Disney Television animation or even just the Disney Afternoon alone could be a goldmine of Escape Room material. Being specific with it could also open it up to expansion of additional escape rooms in the resort or other resorts. I would do a similar approach to what Universal is doing by having players hear the full story on top of doing the puzzles inside, but I’d throw in the boon of there being no up-charge… if you’re a parks ticket holder at least.
Some gimmicks that could be fun:
* Players vs. characters; a team of atmosphere characters are also trying to resolve the predicament the players have been put in, serving as bonus live entertainment for players. To simplify it, it could just be a “default high score” like in arcade games, where players simply have to beat the score of the characters for a challenge.
* Pin prizes; winning some special pins of deep-cut Disney Afternoon picks would be a good incentive to play well.
* Live performances+animatronics - Add some of that visual pizzazz Disney seems to be holding back to 1 per attraction (or worse, one per land) these days to encourage people to come.
As for the placement, I suggest it, if we’re talking ODL, be located on hotel grounds, perhaps the Grand Californian because it has a direct link to its park. I know Disney has had a tradition of axing random hotel amenities like the light show, but being tied to IP could easily save it. Due to this proximity to the aviation-themed area, TaleSpin might be picked as the default, though pretty much all of them have aviation themes of some sort (the Gargoyles for example can physically fly due to their biology). Another idea would be to add another entrance to ODL within Toontown itself, so we are less beholden to a default. If we’re doing WDW, I think Hollywood Studios would work well, or possibly the former DisneyQuest or even the Contempoary, due to a lack of Toontown.
Of course, my first idea would be to go with Don Karnage’s vault of treasures, where the players were thrown into by that dastardly sky pirate.
