Disney donates $50,000 for tornado relief

From Disney press release:

The Walt Disney Company announced today a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross to aide in relief efforts following the severe storms and tornados that impacted Central Florida on Friday, February 2.

"Central Florida is our home and we are committed to assisting in the rebuilding efforts," said Meg Crofton, President, Walt Disney World Resort. "As the relief efforts progress, we will continue to help those in need through strong community partnerships throughout Central Florida."

Disney Worldwide Outreach and Walt Disney World Resort will provide ongoing support through in-kind contributions to Red Cross shelters. The donations include water, blankets, pajamas, games, DVDs and other items.

I don't remember telling you to continue discussion there, or closing the topic. I'm just reminding you there is another topic elsewhere.

This may sound a bit ungrateful, but isn't $50,000 not all that much for a corporation the size of Disney?

it is more than any other company has (in the area) and more than anyone here has (I am guessing...but probably correct)

They don't HAVE to donate anything....and the storms were barely local to Orlando...

I realize that - and it's great that they are doing this. I'm just a little surprised at the amount. I'm sure many Disney employees live in those areas.

probably not.....it would be at least a 60 minute commute....if not further.... (and The Villages is a massive retirement community)

Disney does a lot of other good work throughout the community....

EXPECTING a company to jump in on every last national disaster is probably not a great expectation to have...especially when the vast majority of people choose to sit on their wallets. I do think all companies should be good corporate citizens, but that does not mean jumping in when there is a high-profile incident....they need to give back 365 days a year (but so do individuals)

I didn't mean it was an expectation - just an unusual amount I guess.
I know that many of my mom's neighbors in Lake County are part timers at WDW, but she is south of where they hit.
You're right about giving back 365. If it's one thing that we've taught our 2 kids, it's the importance of giving back and not taking anything for granted. We'll be down there in 2 weeks for our annual vacation, and we're already setting aside some time for volunteering in Lady Lake.

ill go out there and say i also was a little taken aback by the amount of money.. any donation is a good thing.. i just assumed they would of maybe had another 0 on the end or 100k.. just my opinion..

I think Disney went above and beyond with the donation. They didnt have to do anything. Im sure the Red Cross isnt giving them lip about the amount...

Disney can't just give away money, they have others to consult on the matter as well (board members and such) I think they are contributing a lot, cash and other items that are needed. Besides they may make yearly contributions already, but that is not announced. Right now every little bit will help those that lost something or everything.

As stupid as CX's comment is, at least he's telling the truth. At least you learned something new today.

/Could be worse, he could be making up lies about what new attractions and/or parks are opening up
// is a med student.

Unethical is worse than truthful in that case. Some things are best unsaid.

Thats a myth based on erronious reporting and slanted information given to a reporter. That reporter has since left her news organization, in an unwilling fashion.

That notwithstanding, at least 13 of the 20 people killed died in Lake Mack Park, near Paisley, about 5 miles west of Deland.

As for the main devistation, it occurred in Lady Lake, more trailer parks. Yes, a boatload of houses were damaged (i only saw one leveled from the airplane i was photographing from) but the worst of it was in the Sunshine Terrace trailer park, where it looked like a bomb went off. At least two people were killed there.

Right. But Disney profits more than any other corporation from the people in this region. I am not an economic leftist by any means, but 50K is kind of sad.... even Castro offered somewhere between 10M-15M for Katrina help.

Sure Disney doesn't need to offer anything, nor does Target, Best Buy or Ford Motor Company... but who is a synonymous with Central Florida? Who makes money at the cost of state infrastucture? I'm not saying that Disney HAS to give more than this. What I am saying is that they should recognize their role in the community. Given their rights under (somewhat) false pretenses, they should embrace moments like this as ways to get around paying taxes. The Walt Disney Company should use natural disasters, personal and communal crises as well as random charity cases as premium publicity opportunities.
