Disney dollars

Do Disney dolllars expire? And is there any benefit to having a Disney gift card over the dollars?

From what I remember, Disney Dollars do not expire, but as for the second part of the question, I have no idea how a gift card is more beneficial.


Maybe just the fact that the card would be easier to carry around? But other than that, I dunno. Hope this was of help.

If you are buying them for your kids to use in the parks then go with the gift card. Here is why... If you use DDs then they will give you cash back which means you are stuck with real cash for the rest of your purchases which defeats the purpose.

Me personally I buy one of each DD for keeping and get extras for spending, but with kids a gift card is easier on them and the CMs. It's hard for kids to run around with pockets full of dollars and change (not to mention it is easier to lose)

So who are you using it for anyway? And are you staying on property?

Gift cards can be used anywhere except places that only take cash (like the crepe stand in France). They can also be used at Disneyshopping.com, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line and I think still the Disney Stores in the mall (even with The Children's Place owning them), which make them very versatile.

I got a gift card to use at Food and Wine, then spent the remaining balance on some items on Disneyshopping.com - very easy to use, and much simpler than keeping track of dollars. When you purchase something at the parks, you'll get a receipt with your remaining balance, or there's a number you can call to check.

we used Disney GC on our last trip and at several of the locations, the CM had trouble scanning them and asked us to pay with an alternate method, we insisted they try again and they worked or sometimes they had to put them in a plastic bag or put a receipt around them. Also, several of the stands, drinks, pretzels, etc did not take the GC, Disney Dollars would have been easier IMO, especially for a child who would not want to push the CM to try again to swipe the card.

^ That isn't just the gift cards. Many of the magnetic strips on all types of cards have trouble every now and then. Ive had it happen with my resort id and a credit card many times.

That's great to know. I got a gift card for my daughter (who's 9) and was wondering how widely they were accepted around the park.

I've never had problems with the Disney Gift Card, but Resort ID's are notorious for not working properly. Sometimes wrapping register tape around the strip works, other times it's a completely lost cause. I usually averaged between 3 and 5 non-working Resort ID's per day, minimum.

I believe you can order them (the gift cards) online from Disney Shopping - I think I remembered this from a thread awhile back. Do you habe a Disney Store in your airport? You could take them all in there and get them Dollars and Cards before you go, too.

You can get a Disney Gift Card at your local Disney Store. You can also order online at the site linked by the previous poster. Both of these will get you the same generic Mickey design.

But one of the lesser-known secrets is that you can order from the Disneyland website where you have a choice of more than a dozen card designs. Some are Disneyland-specific, showing scenes from those parks, but others are a more general Disney theme. They tend to cycle out older card designs. I saw some Pirates designs that aren't available anymore. They currently have a couple holiday themes to the selection.


Go to www.disneyland.com and then choose the "Are you looking for Tickets Only?" link in the left-hand column. The only limitation is that the online purchases are limited to $25, $50 and $100 values, though shipping is free. At any of the in-person sales locations you can get a card with anywhere from $5 to $1500.

All cards, regardless of purchase location, can have money added to them at the Disney Stores and in the parks. I currently have three gift cards, one for each of my three upcoming trips. A generic Mickey one from the Store, the one with the steam train, and the one with the retro-60's Disneyland map.

With a Disney card if you keep the # on the back, you can get it replaced if you lose it! Then you dont lose your $$$
