Disney Doesn't Want You to See This

Ceilings are incredibly hard when creating a show environment that is not supposed to be a building. Even your basic acoustic tile ceiling is going to be part of the life safety design of a building. Ceilings contain smoke detectors and fire sprinklers which typically work by detecting smoke and/or high temperatures. Any show elements placed at ceiling level have to be designed so that they don’t block these safety systems, and if they do then they need to be incorporated in or around them. Trees work well because they can be designed to be open enough that you’re not going to get too much smoke accumulating under the faux branches and leaves.

Thanks for weighing in with your construction expertise! I’m sure there’s a lot more to it than I understand. It makes sense to me that ceilings would be an extra challenge to theme given safety and operational requirements.

incredibly hard? It’s routinely done on marquee rides. If it were incredibly difficult seems to me it would be close to unheard of. But yet Terror Tower lobby, Rise and Banshee’s long elaborate tunneled queues and things like inside Hogwart castle and goblin bank show off fully themed out ceilings.

Did you miss the part about “not supposed to be a building”? A good chunk of your list includes buildings or at least human made spaces.
