Disney cutting back on hammocks? The poly beach is a disaster area :(

I noticed during a quick trip back in march that not only have hammocks been removed on the poly beach because of the construction area.. but even hammock locations near the pool have turned into swings?!

Seriously.. what the hell do hard swings have to do with polynesian white beach theming? Isn't that what people all dream of.. to go to a white sand beach.. go under a hammock.. and.. sit on a hard swing?! Needless to say they were pretty empty and unused.

Anyone know if this is permanent.. are they seriously cutting back on hammocks now? The poly is a sad shadow of its former self.. from hammocks to being replaced by swings to turkey/chicken being removed from Ohana's.. not to mention the singer still missing outside Ohana's.. whatever happened to that guy? And my cheesy potatoes !?!

They have had hard swings for years, at least the 20 odd years we've been going. The hammocks come and go. Sometimes there sometimes not. Never really asked why. But with the construction the beach is definitely not as large or useable. I have seen the hammocks disappear at other times when work affects the beach.

..... and I still hold steadfast for my trip in October.... I keep telling myself, when Im in my room, I wont notice the difference, can still do the quiet pool at night, and construction won't be an issue when Im in the parks, BUT having said that, I'm getting a tad nervous

For a Poly lover, the way the resort looks now is heartbreaking. Was in the club lounge 4/4 and the spectacular view now marred by construction. Beach area is so small. It is worse in person than the pictures.

We were going to stay Poly club the first week of June...construction be darned...but after seeing it twice (first in Feb then April) we couldn't do it. Made the switch to GF and saved several hundred in the process.

See, I actually considered going back to Concierge, but.... I dont want to risk it until I see it in person. The mere fact, that I have to even reconsider another resort, breaks my heart. I keep looking thru my Poly Rose colored glasses, thinking by October, it *should* be in better shape. If I switched, it would either be Contemporary (havent stayed there in well over a decade) or WL Concierge (never been). Sigh @Tuvalu this is SUCH a hard decision!!!!!!!!!

Last stay at Contemporary was in May 2011, had a tower room facing Bay Lake (prefer that view to "parking lot" aka MK view!) Contemporary is very nostalgic to me, as it is where my family stayed while I was growing up and where I spent my honeymoon. We were very pleased with our visit and loved just getting in the elevator to go down for food or monorail (without having to walk outdoors.) I like the quiet pool area over Bay Lake, it seems more private than Poly and the view is serene and peaceful. Have not stayed club level here, so can't comment on that.

Have stayed club at WL three times (twice was a free upgrade!) in 2009 & 2010. The lounge was never as congested as Poly's, probably because there are tables outside the food service area. And though there is no MK view, you get to overlook the spectacular lobby or the pool/lake while you eat. I liked the breakfast offerings here better than Poly, and being a bread fan looked forward to the nightly sourdough (same as served at Artist Point). The downside to WL club is that the room balconies on the 7th floor are closed in so there is no view unless you are standing out on the balcony. And the rooms are smaller than Poly's. But WL is my second favorite resort, love it at Christmas...and we are booked there for September and November.

I am not trying to talk you out of Poly, just reassuring you that there are other good options to consider. I will return to the Poly when the mess is finished, sad that it will be forever changed, but knowing there is still so much I love about it.

Polydweller is right. Those swings have been there for well over 20 years. The hammocks come and go sometimes because of needing to get equipment in and sometimes because they are getting replaced/ repaired. There was a couple of hammocks that were on both sides of Sunset Pointe that will not be back because that area is being redone but other than that the same hammocks are there.

The last thing I need is a grumpy hubby on vacation LOL ....
Hiya!
So sorry for the rough decision time. We stayed at the Contemp (10th Floor, Tower, Bay Lake view) in Oct13. It was great, but a completely different atmosphere than the Poly. We got our Poly "fix" wandering around before and after Ohana. That was a "sip" and we wanted to chug! When we got back to Joisey, we immediately booked our Poly stay for this past Feb. (Fiji). "Homesick" (like "disaster") is a strong word, but we REALLY missed the Poly. Have stayed at the Contemp at least 5 times (starting in '72), and our daughter was a CM there. They are staying at the Poly, Club Level, in early August - let us know if you want a construction update at that time.

Bill, that would be great! As of right now, I am holding on to a dream I think LOL, I have a ways to go, but I keep thinking, by October, things should be better than they are now, or will be, in the next month or two. I know it sounds really silly, but I already experienced staying at another resort in 2007 (GF) and it just wasn't the same. I keep asking myself, "how bad could it be??!" I mean, so what if there's noise in the morning, we're up early anyway LOL. So what, the lobby is being refurbed, how often am I in there? I' just tryin' to keep the faith!!! ;) Hope you weren't affected too much by all that rain we had yesterday!

By October, if things go to schedule, the bulk of construction should have moved to work on the bungalows in front of Tahiti. Work near Hawaii should be mostly finish in work by that time. The conversion of the east buildings will be underway but that is mostly interior work. Of course, work on the GHC and the pool will be ongoing as well.

We've decided to go in October as much as to get a good idea of progress and future developments as anything. Should have a good idea of the impacts to the Poly by that time. Whatever those are, DVC buyers are unlikely to get the Poly ambiance they have known up to now. It is bring very much changed by all of this and not all positive.

I just realized @Polydweller that now there will only be one building for Concierge, no more Tahiti.. I figured, by October, it should have settled down some too, just GFH and the Volcano Pool (along with Barefoot Bar) will be under construction. We *did* frequent GFH every trip, but thats not TOO bad, (keeping positive LOL) You said it in two words ... Poly Ambiance, that's what Im afraid will change the most.

Hi Deb,
You have a wonderful outlook! One just has to ask how much any construction would effect YOU, and YOUR vacation. Everyone is different, but walking around the Poly grounds in February decided it for us. It was still the Poly! The "pace" was even slower than at the Contemp. Your words about staying elsewhere, "just wasn't the same" says a lot. And, the Fiji side was virtually unaffected, other than a pathway redo, which is now over. The parking lot being torn up had no effect on us, nor did the slight detours to get to the TTC. There was no construction noise that effected us. The partial monorail closings(nothing to do with the Poly) had us doing a few zigs and zags in our plans, but even they gave us some new experiences. I might be naive, but there are always going to be changes, which is the way I think Walt wanted it. Some we'll like, others we won't, but no changes that have been made since our first trip in Nov'71 has completely ruined any vacation we've had there. We might miss the GCH water feature, but might absolutely love what's next.
Made it through the rains - thought the boat was going to launched a week early! Will let you know how my daughter makes out in August!
Hang in there - any decision you make will be good and right. And, The World will always be there!

Your thinking mirrors mine, change *can* be good :) But I kind of thought, if the pool was over crowded, I can always head to Typhoon Lagoon during the day and *hang poolside* at night after the parks. The Poly refurb will be another *remember when* vacation topic for us in the future. (I still remember when they had Macaws in the Lobby!!) I really like that walk to TTC in all honesty! It really will be interesting to see what the House of Mouse team has in store for the Poly... onward and upward! Viva la Polynesian! ;)

You got it!
We loved the macaws, too! I'm hoping they do something great with the Tangaroa Terrace - loved that place!
Can you use GF pool, also?

My guess is yes you can use the GF pool (when GF was going thru DVC refurb, they were able to use the Poly's) but I wouldn't do that in all honesty. I would just head to Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. One thing I really am looking forward to is a hot tub at the Poly. My legs will be happy LOL. There really is alot of wasted space at the Poly, I admit. So, we can do is *wait and see* and book for October 2015 too! LOL
