During the months of May to August, The Disney Channel showed its ability to attract a wide-range of viewers. In fact, it attracted an average of 2.2 million people during the prime-time slot. This put The Disney Channel second only to TNT, who attracted 2.4 million, while beating out other highly watched basic-cable channels such as Lifetime (also part of Disney), TBS and USA.

Now only if they can get ABC to do as good. Who knows, even ABC Family is starting to do better in the ratings, maybe this could be a strong year for ABC.

All those kids out of school and not wanting or needing to go to bed early!

I wish it was "basic cable" here... you have to pay more to get the Disney Channel.

I just wish that would not see the need to repeat the same shows over and over, especially late at night and on the weekends. I want them to keep the shows that they have, and bring back the older Disney material, too. I loved the old MMC and the older live-action movies. And every young person that I know that has seen this stuff loves it too. I do not want a whole generation to miss it!

It is unfortunate that The Disney Channel was a premium channel when it showed that stuff, but as it has become "free" it has stopped showing the stuff my friends who are Disney fans all wanted to see, only to show constant repeats all night long.

I am glad to see good ratings for clean material, but do not forget that much of the increase in ratings comes from its change to being a newly "free" basic cable channel to many people.

It would have these ratings, plus more, if some of the repeats were replaced with the Disney that crossed generations, and the timeless stuff....

Wide-range my butt, its all those kids who watch lizzy, even stevens and kim possible.

prberk: I know what you mean about repeats, from what I've seen on the channel, they have a marathon of a new show they are gonna have on the channel for 1 whole day. Then after that they show 2 episodes of it a day. So now you've already seen all the episodes 2 times in a couple months.

At night (after all the daily repeats for the 3rd time and starting at 2:30) they do show different shows, they are really old shows that made 65 episodes and then forgotten about, I've heard they are gonna take So Weird off air soon.

Well at least they have Honey I shrunk the Kids the TV series, which was based on the movie (not a bad show mind you). And do they still have House Of Mouse?

How is it not a Disney Channel? And what exactly makes something "Disney" anyway?

Let's see...Disney Channel is fresh, relevant, creative, entertaining, targeted at children but enjoyed by many adults. That seems to perfectly describe "Disney" from the very beginning to the present.

Oh, and, yes, House of Mouse is still on Disney Channel every day.

"You're dead if you aim for kids." - Walt Disney

"The important thing is the family. If you can keep the family together - and thats the backbone of our whole business, catering to families - that's what we hope to do." - Walt Disney

"Adults are interested if you don't ply down to the little two- or three-year-olds or talk down. I don't believe in talking down to children.... I like to kind of just talk in a general way to the audience. Children are always reaching." - Walt Disney

"You can't live on things made for children - or for critics. I've never made films for either of them. Disneyland is not just for children. I don't play down." - Walt Disney

Okay...how more DISNEY can you get than Walt? Walt Disney is a man - he IS the only "Disney" as far as the company is concerned!

It is not entirely "fresh, relevant, and creative" when it constantly repeats the same thing all evening.

I actually like "Even Stephens" (sp?) and "Boy Meets World," but I also like the older Disney movies and park stuff that was uniquely Walt Disney. I would like to see both, the new stuff and the old.

Why is this idea "Disney," you ask? Just look at Disneyland (and MK): the past is on the left (Frontierland), the future on the right (Tomorrowland), conjoined in the middle by the world of fantasy. And what do you HAVE to walk through to get there? Main Street, USA, a wonderful trip through the best of the past.

This is Disney's biggest message in everything that made him successful: keep reaching for the future and trying new things, but stay grounded in your knowledge of the past. Learn from it, and fly! But never forget the past.

Disney said that over and over and over. And he proved himself right with his company that lived by it.
