Link will follow later (unless someone else can post it before then), but Disney has announced it's expansion into Shanghai theme park which will begin with a Magic Kingdom-style park featuring unique Shanghai elements.

China approves plans for a new Disney theme park

The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday evening that it has received approval from the central government of China to move forward with plans for a new theme park in Shanghai. The approval brings Disney closer toward its longstanding goal of building a new resort on mainland China. The world’s most populous country is a huge potential growth market for Disney, both for its theme parks and its broader entertainment offerings.
“China is one of the most dynamic, exciting and important countries in the world, and this approval marks a very significant milestone for the Walt Disney Co. in mainland China,” Disney President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said in a prepared statement.
Disney says the approval clears the way for it and the Shanghai government to finalize an agreement to build and operate a new theme park, which would be the company’s sixth, including another Chinese theme park in Hong Kong. The first phase of Shanghai Disneyland, which would reportedly cost $3.6 billion to build, would include a Magic Kingdom-style park “with characteristics tailored to the Shanghai region.” It would also have hotels and a shopping district and could be expanded if the initial park is a success.
Disney would reportedly hold a 43 percent stake in the resort. The Shanghai government would own 57 percent.

Sorry, no concept art.

But we were told just months ago by a self proclaimed "insider" that TWDC and Iger specifically were incapable of understanding China and it's cultural sensitivities to ever make this deal happen.

Guess that self important "insider" was .................... WRONG!!!!!:ROFLOL:

Not sure I like this. I don't know enough but will this funnel money away from WDW in any way? For example, WDW won't get anything new for another decade because they are trying to build up China Disney? I also don't want Disney to be EVERYWHERE. But perhaps it is a good thing if it brings more money into Disney as a whole.

I imagine the China government is paying big time for this, as the profits are being split between China and Disney. I don't know how much impact this will have on NA parks because it might be a totally separate international division with separate budgets.

This is not just Disney expanding for the sake of doing so. The HK park is struggling for a specific reason that needs to be addressed. I remember reading somewhere that they are building one in mainland China because Hong Kong disliked the lower-class Chinese coming to their park and ing in the bushes, being rude, etc, and driving away the more wealthy, more refined HK people. The HK park will benefit from this. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that, but I definitely remember that complaint about the HK park.

Not to beat a dead horse but: this is lots of money that could be spent improving our domestic parks. This is just Iger playing out his obsession with creating new "franchises and properties" rather than creating fully-realized attractions.

The money for the construction of the park and the return on investment is being split about 40 Disney/60 China. The big prize is for Disney in that it already operates over 6,000 Disney outlets locations making millions on Disney toys and apparel. With the brand moving to the mainland the sales of Disney products will continue to increase. Also China is working with Disney to allow additional Disney movies and TV into the mainland. This is nothing but positive for Disney.
