The article did state the reason for the second park is to lower attendance in the other park.
DLP gets the visiting numbers, it's the (AGS) Average Guest Spend that suffers. Something down to prices (this is Europe afterall) and merchandise.
To some extent DLP is very successful. The problems now are repaying debt at an acceptable rate with their creditors. Operationally it is doing ok. It gets visitors, takes money, but they are behind with their debt, so no matter how many visitors, how much they spend, its never going to be fast enough to catch up. Why else would Jay Rasoul be promoted to Head of Theme Parks, directly from CEO of DLP? He must have been doing something right?
DLP is a fantastic product. The main park is so pretty and in my own opinion, more attractive than MK, the Studios was opened not in this way because that is how they wanted them, they did it sensibly and how they should have done, opened to budget and start small. Disney MGM Studios opened with just as fewer attractions back in 1989. DLP will always be compared as the bit that dropped off. U.S resorts have had 50 and 35 years repsectively to improve and develop, DLP has had 13 and a bit years...
Hong Kong will instantly have good wins because of the population. Someone also mentioned that why have two resorts in the same country. The U.S has two and U.S population doesn't ring the same bells as China's and the East!
As long as someone doesn't say why build one in Hong Kong when they have Tokyo, a conversation I had to educate a guest with!

Happy 50th hour Hong Kong Disneyland!
