Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

My point for sharing was her pointing out the transition happening in the industry. Since some still show hesitancy towards believing there's been a change.
Yes, I thought it was an interesting statement, and I appreciate the share!

I just thought the timbre of Variety's tweet lede was misleading. (Also, I know some people are at work and can't actually watch/listen to videos, so I transcribed to make it easier for them.)

Just pointing out no one ever figures the money that certain movies get from cross merchandise tie ins…. Certainly Fantastic Four had more of that then most movies
I don't really count merchandise anymore. It seems so much of it is never sold that any sales offset the huge amount that doesn't. In most cases, it's a wash.

This isn't directly merch being sold by Disney that is being talked about.

This is cross-promotional deals that Disney does with other companies for the promotion of a movie.

And Jaws was the number two movie of the weekend. Wild.

I saw it yesterday in 3-D. The 3-D was mildly successful, sometimes distracting. Still, it was good to see the film in theaters for the first time since I originally saw it as a kid. Despite many, many viewings over the years, it never gets old.
Thanks for mentioning it! I was excited to see it too. I saw it in IMAX, and I felt that was a great option.

I also happened to be able to see the little display Universal Orlando had early in the summer, and it was a neat tribute while it lasted.

I didn't think to check how well Jaws did at the box office until today, but I'm happy it did so well. Of all the movies this summer, Jaws was the one I was most excited to see (in a theater).

Small fun aside, a member of my extended family happened to see the filming of the first attack scene (from a distance).

It is an exceptional movie! I'd like to see more exceptional movies re-released.

Jaws was really good in IMAX. I read the book recently and the movie is far better. Everybody in the book where terrible people that you wished the shark would eat them all. It's good Speilberg didn't follow it too closely. I'm still waiting for Jaws 19.

I don’t know what’s more impressive - that Spielberg was 27 when he finished filming Jaws, or that fifty years later he still is capable of directing astonishing films.

I'm going to see the Downton Abbey movie today and going into a theater for the first time in probably 6 or 7 years. The theater is about half full at the very first showing with pre-purchased tickets, so I think that's pretty good. lol

Bring on the diacetyl!!
What I've noticed is the pre-purchased tickets don't always have people in them when you are actually there. It's like bots grab the tickets and try to sell them elsewhere or people just don't show up which is weird.

I recently saw Toy Story in the theater for Harkin's Classic Movie night for $5. What makes this release special over that besides the price?
