While not exactly theme park news, it is interesting if it will allow Disney to pick up any future characters for use in some of the parks. I do not believe this includes Dreamworks Animation (which is fine by me).

Yes. And I sincerely believe this will lead to new additions at WDW in the long term. Having Spielberg and Disney's "magic" working as a team could mean amazing attractions. I know this is only a movie deal but who knows where that could lead.

Great news!:sohappy::sohappy::sohappy::sohappy:

No, DreamWorks Animation is not included in this. I hope this does generate some magic in the parks, but IMO, this benfits the film division for the most part. According to the article, DreamWorks will release films with Touchstone Pictures, which is big I think. Touchstone really hasn't been up to par with Disney and Miramax as of late. They need something to jump start the Touchstone brand and I think this could do it. The Adventures of Tintin and Lincoln could very big films.

What encourages me is that Iger expects film releases to be "franchises" when possible across all of the Disney units which includes theme parks. A couple more "Cars" type success stories and Iger will have brought Disney all the way back.

Now for those that think Spielberg has lost his way, I remember him saying that he had made the films he wanted/needed to make from a personal desire and now he wants to return to those films he first was successful with and that were so well received. I think now his priority is to make family fare that his kids and grand kids would love and if that is true these "franchises" will end up in the parks and we will all win. :)

Just my 2 cents.

I hear you. Tintin is one of those films that could make it into the parks. Spielberg is making the movie in New Zealand with Peter Jackson. They expect to make three Tintin movies. Who knows what else is in development at DreamWorks. Add those with Disney's movies like The Princess and The Frog, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and John Carter of Mars, and you a lot of potential for new additions to the parks.

You nailed it! I'm hearing great stuff about "The Princess" and JCoM too.

Is the TinTin movie live action?

No. Tintin is motion capture. Like Robert Zemeckis ImageMovers Digital, which is making Disney's A Christmas Carol for 2009. It should be intresting to see. John Carter of Mars is live action though.

Excellent. I love the motion capture stuff. Should be great.

I forgot about "A Christmas Carol". Wow there is some great stuff in the pipeline. Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge! How can you beat that?

I think they are done with the performance capture and are now in the process of mapping the motion capture data onto the CG characters, and just working on the usual post-production jobs. I'd imagine Alan Silversti will begin work on the score soon as well.

I'm not quite jumping on the bandwagon for this move to translate into new material for the parks. But it will definitely give Disney a boost in the number of movies it puts out each year and probably some additional credibility.

In the FWIW dept, Buena Vista is dead last in the # of released films/year by a particular studio. Not that having the least number of released is bad, but it becomes more critical to have successes with each film you put out, and little room for busts on the company income statement. This additional diversity of talent will hopefully = more positive $$ news for the films division.

It's a coup for D-I-C-K Cook (a truly nice guy in a cutthoat business ... yes, I have met him on multiple occassions) and the Studios, but it's impact in the parks is likely to be nil.

It may hurt Uni Creative from a PR end, though, because even though Spielberg (who I haven't met ... yet) was always touted as a creative consultant for the parks, he's really done nothing for a decade unlike say ... John Lasseter.

I'd like to beat that - and him - with a large mallet. That man makes everything he appears in stupid. Up to this point, I've been a fan of every Disney animated film, and snap them up the moment they're released to DVD. I'm afraid this is one I'll be skipping.
I'm also not sure how I feel about this whole Dreamworks thing. I can't think of a single film they've put out recently that I've really liked...including their animation division ("Shrek" rates at the bottom of my animation list). I've always been a fan of Steven Spielberg, but I feel Dreamworks was a huge mistake for him. Hopefully, if this deal is a go, then Disney will be a little more involved in the output of Dreamworks and help make their films something worthwhile.

I think Jim Carrey was good in The Grinch, and I also think he will do a good job in A Christmas Carol. About DreamWorks, they've put out some good films. Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Seabiscut, Transformers, Sweeney Todd. They have some good films out and some more coming out like Tintin and Lovely Bones(although that is with Paramount) as well as Lincoln bio-film.

Okay, now I'm confused. Here's a quote from the CNN article:

"Disney will market at least six DreamWorks live-action movies each year produced through DreamWorks' agreement with India's Reliance BIG Entertainment, a major producer of Bollywood film, they said.

The Disney deal replaces an agreement DreamWorks announced last year with Universal that fell apart in recent weeks.

The announcement did not reveal terms, but industry media reports said the Universal deal collapsed when DreamWorks asked for cash to help finance the movies to be made under the Reliance contract.
Reliance will handle distribution of the movies in India."

So....Is Disney going to distribute only the Dreamworks/Reliance pictures, or all Dreamworks SKG releases?

All DreamWorks SKG releases. I think.

According to a report in USA Today - After an abrupt end to a long partnership with Universal Studios, Steven Spielberg announced yesterday that he would be partnering his Dreamworks Studio with Disney to distribute at least 6 of his feature films starting in 2010.

Spielberg has had a long relationship with Universal, the studio where he filmed two of his biggest hits - Jaws and E.T. According to the article in USA Today "Universal's sudden announcement that it was finished with DreamWorks was a rare flash of hostility in Hollywood, where happy endings in business deals are often as forced as they are in the average romantic comedies, and even breakups occur amid smiling faces."

With Universal out of the picture, so to speak, Spielberg needed a major studio that could distribute his films - enter Disney.

This won't affect any of Dreamsworks animated features, like Shrek - Dreamworks Animation was split off and sold a few years ago.

WOW! Sooo...Tin-Tin, Lincoln, Interstellar, and whatever else he does down the road, will all be attached to Disney. This is just unreal!
